Many times I've watched this fight,B Hop was like a baby in this fight trying to influence the referee, well it back fired on him.
Why didn't sniffer accept BHops offer for a rematch in Wales?? He even said Enzo could be ref. Instead the sniffer fled to the hills to a life of coke booze & beating up his G/F
The fact is he beat 10 world champions, was unbeaten and had 20 or more title defences, won every belt at Super Middleweight (WBO, IBF, WBC, WBA + Ring Magazine/Lineal) and went up to light heavyweight to win the lineal title. All of these achievements are not matched by Carl Froch or really any other British Super Middleweight that I can think of. Yes two of Calzaghe’s wins were close split decisions (Reid and Hopkins) but a few of Froch’s wins were debatable (Dirrell and Johnson) and a few of Eubanks were (Ray Close and Michael Watson) and Calzaghe didn’t suffer any defeats like they did. As for the argument he beat old past it men, this is based on his last two fights when he was arguably past prime himself. Roy Jones was over the hill no doubt but Bernard Hopkins beat Antonio Tarver and Ronald Wright in his two fights before Calzaghe and Pavlick (3 wins against then top 10 p4p fighters) in his next fight after, them regained and unified titles years later, I don’t think he was past it at all. Funny how Froch gets a pass for beating over the hill fighters (Glen Johnson, Robin Reid) and without saying too much and trying to get anyone in trouble I have it on good authority that Reid took a dive vs Froch. I know some villains who won money on it and if you watch it yourself you will see what I mean when he quits in the corner but believe what you want. Simply put he’s the best British Super Middleweight ever, and arguably the world’s best Super Middleweight ever up there with the likes of Ward, Jones, Toney etc. And beats one or two on that list prime for prime in my opinion.
I quite like slappy Joe, but he was already Slappy Joe by the time I was in High School so quite a lot of his allure for me was just the fact that old'ens, like CJ, get so upset by Joe's slaps. Hell, I reckon I might have messed with CJ himself over Joe on BS or BA years ago.
46-0.....number 1 in two divisions and top 3 P4P. Beat 12 fighters who was current/former/future or had fought for world champion/championship. Greatest ever at 168.
Didn’t care much for Zags but can’t really argue much with those that place him at the top of the 168lbers. I was unimpressed by his overall package but he had outstanding stamina and confidence which I’m sure had much to do with his allure. His wins versus two legends one who was quite literally a shell of his former self aren’t as impressive as his win versus Kessler and Eubanks. I actually don’t like busting people’s bubbles so I mostly stay away from this subject. Still with that said he should be considered an ATG what number I’m still not sure depends how big our list is.
one of the best british smws ever for sure but a poor role model for wales with his marital and drug abuse.
"i had too, didnt I? Hopkins had just knocked me down" - joe calzaghe. that prevented hopkins from securing a 2 round ko, but credit to joe for stepping up against a 40something atg and just about making it.
