i posted this in another thread but i wanted to start a new one because we don't have enough calzaghe threads on here

Joe Calzaghe = very good fighter but let's look at all of his career achievements:

From either the Ring Magazine or the BWAA

fighter of the year awards - none
fight of the year awards - none
round of the year awards - none
ko of the year awards - none
months ranked as the #1 lb for lb best fighter - none

he did win the 2008 manager of the year award from the bwaa. an award so prestigious that they didn't even award it this past year. i'm assuming he won that award for managing to stay away from good fighters in their prime for his entire career. congrats joe!

he beat jeff lacy for the 168 title and a 43-yr old bhop by sd to win the other. jermain taylor beat hopkins twice, three years before joe.

Nah.... to me that is unfair. I get on Calzaghe a lot, but those are artificial barometers. Lots of guys fly under the radar and achieve great things with garnering specific awards or accolades.

I don't rate his career achievements very highly at all. From '97-'06 he achieved absolutely **** all except one of the worst WBOgus title reigns in history. Taking 9 years to unify is bull****, especially when you have a big fanbase and a powerful promoter. His wins over Lacy and Kessler were good, but he didn't deserve the decision vs B-Hop, and the Jones win was a joke. I don't think history will look kindly upon him, he took a long long time to achieve not much IMO.

Lol at the clutching of straws here. Round of the year

FFS Gatti and Ward had round of the year. Should they be classed above Joe also? Dumbass.

He won a sports personality award, beat every body he fought, was clearly ducked by Ottke who held two titles for a long time while he was at SMW, beat every body he fought and was a 2 weight champ. He fought as many big names as RJJ and his title reighn was at least as good as B-hops. Won big fights after completely losing power.

Can't question his achievments as a World class fighter.
Was never an Elite fighter though.

    Ranking Calslappy's greatest wins
#1. Kessler - good, solid fighter, but not a world beater by any stretch.
#2. Hopkins - well past and two weight classes above his prime but still formidable.
#3. Lacy - it looked great until Lacy's career unfolded.

A good, solid resume for a decent fighter. Unfortunately, his fans claim this makes him and all-time great who deserves worldwide acclaim.

Hopkins and Mayweather achieved that before him, and others such as Sugar Ray Leonard.

    Well said!

If the Hopkins win was so overrated because of Hopkins age then boxing is in a sorry ****ing state because from where i was standing Hopkins schooled Pascal the other night who just beat Chad Dawson.

Obviously all of these younger fighters are just completely and totally **** if they are getting dominated by a 46 year old grandad.

    I'm sticking to "soccer"
