Never before has a fighter made so much of so little, IMO. Calzaghe has terrific workrate, stamina, great handspeed, good chin. Not a great deal of skill or power. Had he ever faced an elite fighter, I believe he would've been exposed. If Hopkins had only been a bit younger, he would've had the stamina to do the job, absolutely no doubt. But you have to give it to Calzaghe, he's going to ride off into the sunset with that zero. You have to give him credit for that. Smart man.

What was Lennox nationality? He gets props because he wasn't afraid to fight the best when they were in their primes...he wanted to be the best. That's how you get respect in this game.

 

Roy should never have had to go to wales to fight Joe, coz he was the King.
But Hopkins should have, you can argue whether it be when the money was offered before Taylor (If he thought it would be that easy) or when he skipped SMW completely to go to LHW. The reason he didnt is risk vs reward, a defeat to joe at 168 after losses to Taylor would have effectively ended his gravy train in the states, whereas a loss to tarver would have still left it open coz of him going up 2 divisions and facing the man, whos a big name in the states.

I dont like going on about records for the simple reason the same people(Not aimed at you BadIntentions) shouting for pavlik to face Joe after Bhop and would wet themselves to have those two names on his record, are the same ones who dismiss Hopkins and Eubank from Joes. And whatever rubbish comes out of the mouths of Nuthuggers or Haters on this forum Joe Calzaghe is NOT in his prime.

ricky hatton didn't get "lucky".

he left frank warren, fought solid opponents in the US and earned his shot at the best fighter in the world. there's no way frank warren would have taken the positive approach ricky hatton took once he left warren because warren is all about numbers - keep your fighter winning at minimal risk. and with the tag 'world champion' floating around it's easy to fool the public at large.

and he relies on this.

if calzaghe did that 8 years ago he could have have got hopkins or jones without question because neither fighter had a strong division.

but instead he stayed in wales and called them out from there.

the business side of boxing just doesn't work like that - and they both knew it.

I find this line by my fellow countrymen that starts with 'if calzaghe was american..' to be getting qute painful.

Calzaghe doesn't get blanket respect because most Americans didn't know he existed until he beat Lacy, then he followed his step into the limelight with the Manfredo debacle and after beating Kessler took on a 40+ hopkins and looked terrible doing it, plus a lot of people don't like his slapping technique.

None of these things are nationality related.

Also the fact that after seeing most of his fights I cannot remember a TIME when he was significantly on the back foot for more than 2 seconds.

If Joe had fought these 'elite' fighters you harp on about he might well have been made to look bad at points / much of the fights, but I don't know how ready anybody should be to bet that he loses.

His punches and his chin are underrated.
