I don't know, mate. I have a few old tapes from the early part of his early career on Sky and they did refer to him as a puncher though there were always questions about his technique. He did slap at times but, unlike in his prime years, when he sat down on his shots, he did have really good power. Even when he was forced to use his power later in his career, like against Mitchell, he showed he still had it but because of how easily his hands were damaged, we didn't see it more often.

I'd consider him a power puncher early in his career though. His shots looked good and obviously he had an outstanding 22-0 record with 21 knockouts. Regardless of how highly you rate his power, it's pretty clear from his record alone that he had it.

How many of those 21 stoppages were clean countouts, and how many were slap-blizzard TKOs? :huh

How many were achieved against solid journeymen, and how many were against utter, utter bums? :huh

However, I have managed to find some evidence of him being "very heavy-handed" indeed...

What are you sorry to me for? Read Headbangers quote below. It says it all.

Thing is, there are also posts that show Calzaghe calling out Jones. Warren even offered Jones a career high purse to fight Jones, but wanted it away from Florida for dope testing. Jones wasnt interested as he could make 2mil a fight, fighting nobodies. Remeber also that Jones was a LHW whilst Calzgahe was a SMW and the fight wasnt an attraction when you consider Jones was fighting at HW before Calzaghe even beat Mitchell. Still when they did fight Calzaghe beat Jones on skill :smoke

Still very flattered you made a thread directed towards me personally :patsch
Thats right, all wins lead to Calzaghe :smoke

When Calzaghe won the young British boxer of the year, his power was heavily referred to. Look back at the pre-fight packages before his bouts on Sky and tell me they didn't emphasize his power. Before the Lacy or Manfredo fight on ITV, they showed a video package and talked about how his power had changed over the years.

Or tell me how many fighters get a world title shot with a 95% knockout ratio. Care to give me 10?

You're a joke of a poster. The only reason I bothered to reply to you seriously was because you called me out on what I said but I think our discussion is over, if you're going to resort to this bull****. You're not worth my time at all. Completely inferior poster.

Enjoy debating with Headbanger and co. though.

Look at his fights yourself and be your own judge. He did look great against Pavlik & Tarver but he was clearly past prime. Before Tarver he didn't look prime at all against JT and before Pavlik he clearly didn't have the stamina he once had and still doesn't. In his prime, Hopkins was more offensive-minded and if you don't belive me then watch most of his fights from 97-03. Johnson,Joppy,Trinidad, all fights where he threw his hands much more than we're accustomed to seeing him do recently(well despite the Pascal fight lol).

That really does say it all about you. You enjoy debating with a one line per post troll who spends his days and nights regurgitating the same ancient jokes again and again and again, and has absolutely zero knowledge of any boxer outwith Joe Calzaghe. At least you have managed to confirm what I thought 100%. :smoke

If you listen to the Sky broadcast of Eubank-Calzaghe they refer to him being called a slapper by critics in the press. Eubank also said if he punched properly he wouldn't have suffered the hand problems he had. Throwing lots of combinations is more likely to damage the hands because you lose the technique

No doubt he had good power but I don't think it was every a big strength, although it would get opponents respect

Was he "very heavy handed" though in your opinion? I think that's an absurd comment to make. When I hear "very heavy handed", I think of serious punchers, not a volume puncher who rarely (if ever) scored countout KOs.

being "offensive minded" = better? not in my book.

maybe the taylor performances were about him still fighting at a weight he couldn't comfortably make...maybe the change in style was down to fighting at a higher weight...you can't just say he was better earlier when his best wins (imo) & his best performances (in his opinion) came at a time when people are saying he was shot (primarily to take the shine off that one defeat to calzaghe).
