Yeh but jones wasnt prime when calzaghe fought Kessler in 2007 I'm in no doubt that a prime jones beats Kessler. Way to much speed.
Why do people like yourself seem so butt hurt just because people like me think Joe fought absolutely nobody? If you think Joe's resume is a virtual murderer's row of HOF caliber opponents, then good for you. If you think beating HBO hype job Lacy with his 21 victories and zero noteable wins or reality show contestants Manfredo and Bika or even a depleted Jones, Eubank and declining Hopkins are something to behold then you are more than welcome to that. I just don't agree, like most people outside the UK, but whatever. I guess if Joe had decided to quit lying about his fear of flying before 2008, then maybe we could have saw what he may have done...
Lets not forget Calzaghe had an amazing Amatuer record. Some records say he won 110-10, Others say 120-9, 130-2 but whatever they state he always had that winning attitude. He was never KO'd. He beat Chris Bryd, KO'd Glenn Catley & Dean Francis. Calzaghe was screwed out of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics due to politics (the Welsh ABA refused to nominate him because they felt Joe was disrespectful the way he would drop his gloves and tap opponents on the head, and Ali shuffles etc). Robin Reid went to the Olympics instead of Joe, despite Joe having knocked out top Euro opponents that Reid had lost to. Calzaghe called Reid for this and their hatred began. When Reid became World Champion, Calzaghe wanted a unification fight but Reid wouldnt fight him. Only after he had lost his title did Reid accept the fight. After Calzaghe won the fight, which was the only time he really struggled was quoted as saying he was suffering from food poisoning and a broken hand from early in the fight.
Had Calzaghe gone to the Olympic, I'm certain he would have come back with a medal, if not gold. Many of my friends who have sparred with Joe state that he could change during sparring. If they had began the better, would end up getting battered. He was that good at changing tactics. He had a very good boxing brain. Joe in his earlier years before getting damaged hands was a heavy puncher as his KO % shows. But he had to change due to this problem. This is why many have claimed he slapped. But take it from me. He still hit hard. Look at RJJ face during their fight, bloody nose etc. Joe in his earlier Pro career used to look for the KO/TKO. But as his hands got worse, was contempt with winning by decision. Whatever the win (A win is a win) attitude. Britsh have their opinions on Joe and the American have theirs on RJJ. Nobody knows how Joe at his peak (good hands) would have boxed RJJ at his peak, but I can assure you this. It would have been one hell of a fight.
holy crap these boards have hit a new low. some people now think kessler could have beat a prime jones. pure stupidity. these posters must be around 12 years old. to the poster above, joe never beat chris byrd as an amateur. this was made up like a lot of things about calzaghe. here's calzaghe losing as an amateur if you haven't seen it. nothing is more overrated than an undefeated record in pro boxing. you're not forced to face anyone. the fighters and managers get to decide when and where they face their opponent. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/9164514.stm joe was a very good fighter but he knows, as well as his son if you read the article above, that joe stood no chance vs jones at his peak.
Ha ha ha and Jones and Hopkins their records can be dragged through mud. Jones fought easy opponents to win titles but never really stayed at the weights to show dominance against top fighters in the weight class, was done for usings peds.Jones was just a paper champ at whatever weight he fought at because there was no depth to his reign and never left the shores of the US in his prime. Hopkins gets more respect here at least he stayed at middleweight and held that title and has shown his skillset. But he did back out of fighting Calzaghe in the US in 2002. (but if i were a hater id drag his name through mud) Your obviously a Calzaghe hater, just be objective dude Joe wanted Hopkins and Taylor but they both backed out the same for Ottke he didnt want nothing to do with Joe. If your going to discredit Calzaghe resume then please discredit those that did not want to fight him. Joe was too much a threat to most
please explain why in this british documentary on roy jones done in 2000 that calzaghe's name isn't even mentioned once. joe was in his third year of his wbo "title reign" and even his own people know he wasn't worth a mention. the only threat for joe during this time was a loss. he was in hiding. you need to put your pang of british loyalty away if you want to see things for how they are. this board will do great things for you if you're willing to listen to people instead of blindly defending heroes you grew up with objective posters wont be doubting joe's ability, just like some british won't accept the obvious and deserved critisism of his career, no matter what
Believe what you like, British Loyalty?? hmm so me having favourites like Morales and Mayweather is british biasness??? lol i think you need to reverse your quote back at yourself.
Go ahead and drag Hopkins and Jones records through the mud. I'm certainly not going to get butt hurt about it like you. If you think their resume's are garbage, good for you. People like yourself sound really stupid calling someone with a differing opinion a hater. It's not my fault that Joe had this fear of flying that prevented him from coming to the states prior to 2008. The same fear that magically disappeared 6 years later (After the failed negotiations with Hopkins in 2002) when Jones was shot and Hopkins was slowing down. At that time Chad Dawson was in staunch pursuit of a fight with Joe, who decided beating a declining American fighter and another who was absolutely shot was enough and subsequently retired. You keep mentioning all these fighters who were scared to fight Joe. So if I ask you for a link to a statement or some kind of verifiable evidence that these guys were "scared" as you're trying to pass off as fact, then I'm sure you would be able to do so right? You can love Joe all you want, but history won't be kind to Joe. Nobody outside the UK cares about him or his padded unbeaten record. Ricky Hatton gets more love and respect than Joe and Hatton's been KTFO twice. If Joe was so great, why isn't he being universally (key word) recognized as one of the GOATS, up there with SRR and Armstrong, Ali , Hagler and those types of guys?Is it his record? Ottke retired unbeaten, nobody cares about him. Ricardo Lopez retired unbeaten, but guess what? He's arguable the greatest little man of all time. What's Joe's distinction? You can make a case for Jones being the best SMW of all time. IMO, Joe is as overrated as a fighter can get based solely on his 46-0 record. At 44-2 or 43-3, nobody would even be talking about him.
all im saying brother is that 99% of people who feel a pang of pride and jump to calzaghe's defense no matter what are brits who grew up watching him i can understand it because he was a top boxer, but you need to understand why he and frank ****** cheapened his career and cheapened how he'll be remembered
Too many brits unfortunately get pulled in on american hype especially british media it still happens today. Just cos certain people in the media believe doesnt mean its true. plus even at that time Calzaghe hadnt made such a big name of himself due to fish eyes protecting his purse whereas the Jones Hype train was blazing. Ever heard the song "News Of The world" by The Jam? go listen.....
Stopped reading right here, thanks for putting this first so I didn't have to waste my time reading all that bull****... Roy Jones beat Hopkins with one hand.... Hopkins humiliated Tarver and Johnson... but Roy "stepped it up" and lost to Tarver and Johnson... No sense whatsoever It seems like people just repeat what they hear, and didn't actually watch Jones fight.
