Not really. I was 9 years old in 1990 and had never heard of Joe Calzaghe. God, you really are a lobotomised berk. :rofl:nut
btw, i just want everyone to see around this time how far joe was away from being an elite amateur. here's joe's loss to smyth again. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm7qcmu7UvQ[/ame] and here's the same smyth, this time with headgear being blown out by klemetsen [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2bDZU1IJds[/ame]
You continue having a hard time believing that Brits hype american fighters, as i continually have debates with alot of them on that subject. Recall the Lacy fight and how hyped he was???? The next coming of Tyson!! so Americans said. British media got sucked into that one bigtime....
Ward, RJJ, Toney and many others. Only opponents worth nothing on Calzaghe's SMW record are Lacy and Kessler.
The Euro's are quick to quote 46-0, but can't accept or acknowledge that the road to 46-0 was pretty ****ing easy. Now that I think about it, with that resume I expect nothing short of perfection!!!
whilst this is true, even the feat of 46 undefeated versus largely middling opps is pretty good going and deserves some respect for perservering dedication, especially when its considering its from a guy who could only really own the minor world title as opposed to defending unified crowns. Even ATGs like Lennox picked up at least one defeat from less than stellar opposition.
I don't consider McCall less than stellar, McCall was a solid underrated fighter who had emotional and personal problems, nothing else. While he wasn't the greatest, he had decent skills, power and a granite chin. An opponent with those attributes can give hell to any fighter. Rahman is the only joke(compared to Lewis) of a loss I can't disagree with. However, based on ability I would rate Rahman alongside the likes of Reid and Sheika, who both are some of Calzaghe's greatest spectacles.
It's fair to say almost all the world trusts/buys into America's hype, because they know that usually the Americans do deliver. Just take a look at Hollywood and musical artists as two prime examples out of many. If Lacy's failure to deliver proves to you that America is nothing but "hype" while completely forgetting the likes of Ali, Tyson, Marciano, Hearns, Leonard, Hagler and ENDLESS others, then you have issues.
Yep Rahman was the one I was thinking of. Rahman was not bad, true, but I dont think he was on par with Reid. Reid was really quite good, its arguable he won the world title three times (one legit, one versus Calzaghe, one versus Ottke). But he burned out fast. Hes more of a Jeff Lacy in my book, a very hard hitter with little else in the skillset. And yet 46-0 is really not something to be shirked at for a smalltime champion. Its fairto call him a small title champ because he never defended a bigger title, nor defended a unifed title, so we cant say that was within his capabilities - theres no evidence for that.
agreed, there have been at least a hundred 'new tysons' over the last three decades and nearly all of them failed to deliver tyson-sque feats.
So let me ask you this. If an unblemished record deserves some respect why does Ottke seem to get less respect than Joe? Going undefeated fighting mid-level opposition isn't impressive. 44-2, 43-3, 42-4, fighting the best fighters is respectable. Even if the 40+ wins were against bums and the losses against worthy opponents, that still gets more respect than beating a majority of guys a few notches up from a sparring partner.
