During Roy Jones prime Calzaghe was not that big of deal, not even in the UK, infact he was seen as a bit of joke for a while due to his farcical level of opposition. His opponents were so bad and his viewing figures so low that he got booted off SkySports because no one wanted to watch his fights, the Mario Veit rematch was the final straw. It was only after this happened that his promoter had his hand forced so went to ITV with the promise of big fights and made the Lacy and Kessler fights which of course catapulted Calzaghe to the level of superstardom. By this time Jones was finished and no longer relevant at the top level, although Calzaghe of course still fought him.

But you're quoting a post where I respond to someone saying he is unknown. Now.

hes known now because, like Mundine, he fished the faded fortysomething legends, and of course the partial unification in his last title fight helped. And now, like Mundine, he is well known his locale (in the British Isles for Joe) and known in the world less so. A local hero who stepped up to world level 2 or 3 times like Barry McGuigan did.

before that he used to occupy 10-20 word entries in newspapers. literally, you could cover his coverage in a paper with your thumb and miss it. on the Tyson-McBride bill I think it was, joe got a two sentence mention in the large Tyson article, despite it was him owning a supposed belt - in other words his belt was worth much less than a shot ex champ fighting a bum for no belt.

although to be fair, calzaghe was facing an unknown subdomestic for his world title again that night, so its fair he should get 1 or 2 sentence mention for pissing hard on his fans faces so much again. And besides, a lot of his fans enjoyed being pissed on in the face fight after fight, so why shouldn't he?

Shot, bloated, brittle hands, end of career Calzaghe who was new to the LHW and fighting Jones in America dominated Jones.
Why anyone would think it would have been any different a few years ago is beyond me.

Look at the videos and try and tell me how supposedly different Jones is in these videos, because what is apparent to me is the opponents, where one is more skilled and faster rather than Jones.
Also there were questions with regards to tests for Jones after this fight

    Jones vs Hall
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB4JUDQNM0c

    Jones vs Calzaghe
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcSVev-wcdI

Watch how people will comment on this post, but not be able to point out all these alledged differences based on the videos. We can count them

He is unknown outside of britain, he wasnt even known that well in britain until he beat kessler and lacy. Even when he beat eubank he was unknown. O and to the guy who sais toney wasnt at the top of the p4p list when he fought jones. Go know ur history before u blab ****. Toney would have beat joe.

Im not so sure. I watched the video of when Jones and Collins were sat together with Eubank, Woodhall and Calzaghe and Collins was asking Roy why he wouldnt fight and saying how he wanted the fight and Roy didnt. Also I recall Collins getting in the ring and looking for the fight with Jones, and Jones seemed to ignore him in the ring

IDK. All you guys are way smarter than I am, being able to use your Nostradamus like talents to predict how fights that never happened might go. What I do know is that RJJ in his prime appeared unbeatable (though patently, no man is) and that Zaggy retired unbeaten.

I've no problem with saying that both are (hang em up Roy) or were great fighters. Why is this an issue? Do you even imagine that Roy would say that Zaggy wasn't fit to sniff his socks (or whatever) ffs?

At world class level it's a rare fighter than can finish a full career unbeaten and even disputing Calzaghies resume doesn't change that fact. Could he have fought better quality opposition? Sure. Would they have beaten him? Who fuck even knows.

The gap in between fact and speculation is the gap that produces this kinda endlessly repetitive discussion. The answer is whatever you want it to be. It's kinda sad that fans of the sport feel the need to create this kinda thread though.

Seems a bit odd coming from you Herol, :nut
Still I can put you down as someone who predictably ducked the video post :lol:. Seems the irrelevance from you played right into it

Calzaghe is a level or two above Jones in boxing skills.

All those chicken fighting moves don't work on Joe.

true, I have pissed on your face metaphorically too just like Joe Cal did with a lot of his subdomestic title opposition which you lapped up happily.

Seriously and fairly, popularity-wise, do you consider him globally recognized?
