Hatton thought Floyd was **** on the inside and thought he could use his normal tactics to unsettle him. what he found instead was another fighter willing to bend the rules, only more sucessfully.

Theres possibly some truth in that.
I never liked Hatton for his holding and holding and hitting and I dont think Cortez did wrong for breaking them, though he did want to do it very quickly due to Hattons reputatation.
Problem with Cortez is that when Calzaghe beat Hopkins, Cortez allowed Hopkins to hold alot more.
I think the problem with Cortez is lack of consistancy.

I dont like fighters that do so much often illegal holding like Hatton, Ward, Hopkins. They all seem like very dirty fighters who get away/got away with alot in my opinion

He was inconsistent at best. At times he wouldn't let them get within a foot of each other.

Cortez is a terrible and unfair referee, and was awful in that fight.

Its funny cause before that fight, team mayweather was pissed that cortez was name the ref cause cortez allow hatton to hold alot vs a smaller shot castillo. But i also find it funny that after cortez finally allow hatton to hold, mayweather was winning rounds and later won by tko. And yet mayweather haters wont mention it cause they are idiots.

    Agreed.

I won't watch, let alone pay for another episode of 'The Joe Cortez Show'.

Indeed, Cortez was just as consistent when in charge of Hopkins-Calzaghe, really stamped down on Hopkins 'old-school' tactics..... :patsch

Why can't hatton supporters understand...you are NOT allowed to constantly hug and hold. Joe Cortez simply upheld the rules and stopped hatton turning that fight into a stinker which it would have been had hatton been allowed to wrestle and hold all night

Cortez did a terrible job and he was bias against Hatton. Hatton already lost the fight when Cortez was assigned.

Cortez was the hatton camps preferred choice BEFORE the fight.
They were saying how glad they were it was Joe Cortez

Agreed , but he didnt uphold ALL the rules, he did nothing about PBF's constant use of the forearm and elbow into Hattons face, or the fact that turning your back on an opponent CAN be termed as 'refusal to engage' punishable by the docking of a point.

I am from the UK but have never really been a Hatton fan, if i want tos ee wrestling i will watch WWE. I think all you can ask is that a referee in any sport calls it consistantly and fairly down the middle, which i am afraid Cortez most certainly did not do on this occasion. I am not stupid enough to believe it would have changed the outcome by any means, PBF is that class above but it did stop the fight from being the spectacle it could and should have been.

This. As a fan of the sport I have no problem with refs cracking down on excessive holding. It's their job to do that and it definately helps the spectacle. But they have to be consistent. Whether you're an inside fighter, or seen as slick or "crafty", excessive holding is excessive holding and they all should be penalised equally.

Reality doesn't agree to well with the haters, "If only Joe Cortez wasn't the ref Ricky would have won"

Kind of sad, this many years after the fight, they are still dealing with the butthurt.
