But Kirkland slipped three times in a round, wasn't that enough to show that he was not fit to fight?
And we would have missed a close classic encounter ending in a controversial draw which would be debated who really won (Pac for me) for many years!
I love how many people ignore the massive differences between this and Pacquiao - Marquez. Glassland was chicken dancing or becoming stiffed pinned EVERY time he took a shot, even jabs. This got worse with after each knockdown. He was completely gone, this wasn't a fighter who showed true recouperative ability - Anyone who knows boxing knows that just because you rise from the canvas, it doesn't necessarily mean that you've adequately recovered. Marquez still showed skill and the ability to potentially fight on against Pacquiao, not to mention the fact that he was a proven world class champion against a very, very heavy puncher. Kirkland was seriously out of it and against a feather fisted opponent, one on whom his own shots had no effect whatsoever.
No, it just showed he used the wrong shoes!!!! He should get one of those Tyson wore, the combat boots, mid ankle ones.
20 seconds after hitting the canvas the third time James was still lost. Cortez (ok, he was a little over dramatic) but he saved James Kirkland from a possible permanent damage. Now, Cortez can't save him from his desicions in life. I hope James stays in the right pathway. Talent isn't enought in boxing. You need discipline. I never saw him as a star. But I think Kirkland can have a decent career.
Why is everyone mad at Cortez? Kirkland was clearly hurt and that was Cortez's one and only chance to teabag him.
I think that Kirkland should have been allowed at least the 2nd round, but I damn sure don't fault Joe Cortez or any other ref for stopping a fight after 3 knockdowns in one round.
Marquez wasn't a proven warrior at that point of his career though. He'd hardly had a difficult fight in his career up until that point. Stopping the Kirkland fight and not stopping the Marquez fight just screams inconsistency from Joe Cortez. Personally, I think Kirkland should've been given another chance to continue even though he probably would've been stopped a short while afterward. The knockdowns simply weren't hard enough for me to justify a stoppage at that point.
