This must be old news, i only just found out but damn i didn't know Joe COrtez mother died the same night as the fight ?

I feel sorry for Cortez, he gets so much hate but after thinking a lot about it that was one difficult event he had to control. Easy for everyone to jump on his case about his decisions but he had split seconds to make his decisions with millions of people watching while you and i sit here comfortable at home saying how idiotic he is and how we would have done it.

Trying to control Mayweather and Ortiz, trying to stop them from throwing elbows and headbutts without getting involved too much because everyone bashes him for being to involved in Mayweather Hatton and 'not letting Hatton fight his fight', then Ortiz fouls so blatantly that Cortez has to take off a point....everything is hectic...Mayweathers visibly pissed off...Ortiz knows hes wrong and is trying to apologise..Cortez trying to keep everything in order..tries to resume teh fight...remembers about the time keeper...quickly tries to patch that up, looks back and Ortiz is on the floor KTFO.

Thats a lot of stress for anyone and i can fully understand why he couldn't make perfect calls. I think he did the best he could and it would be difficult to do everything perfectly on such a big stage with 2 drama queens on your best day....much less the day your mother has died.

So give this guy a break. Not many people can do what he does.

    His mother passed away?

Damn. I've been one of the most vocal critics of Cortez' performance last weekend, so I feel kinda' bad now. R.I.P Mrs Cortez.

So his mother day. that is said and sympthay goes to him, it is a bad thing to happen to anyone.

However his reffing and judgment on the night was poor and he should be punished. if his mind was not in the right place he should not of reffed the fight simple as.

I will always be weary of him due to his past reffin and this fight nailed it on the head.

    He should be punished ?

The guys not a robot. Hes only human and made the mistake of looking to the time keeper instead of the fighters for a few seconds.
It was a shitty chain of events that Cortez had to try keep control of. It was a very difficult fight to ref, with both fighters playing dirty. Plus being under such spotlight, your minds racing a million miles an hour, trying to keep track of many different things, he didnt have time to sit down for 10-15 min like we do and think about how best this situation should be handled. He had split seconds.

Im just trying to put myself in his shoes like maybe everybody should.

I just don't think he deserves to be so heavily criticized ( to say the least...theres thousands of posts on forums and youtube videos along the lines of "**** you cortez" "pathetic ref" "should be banned from reffing" )
so i only ask that anybody reading this to go a little easier on the criticising and perhaps aware others.

Then he shouldn't have been in charge of the fight if this was the case.

The result would've been the same irrespective of where Cortez was looking.

Cortez looking at Floyd & Vic when Floyd let them go = KO
Cortez not looking at Floyd & Victor when Floyd let them go = KO

Floyd acted within the rules. As such, Cortez wasn't needed other than to count to 10.

If he wasnt emotionally prepare to referee a fight of this magnitude he should have not been refeering. Any other major ref would have handled the situation much better than he.

I agree that he shouldn't have been reffing under the circumstances ( but i imagine there would be a few obstacles such as actually finding a ref ready to jump in, getting both teams to agree to it etc ) but to say for CERTAIN that any other major ref would have handled it better...i can't agree with it.

Trying to maintain 2 fighters that are playing dirty...its just not easy.

****ing hell, I don't care what happens, unless a hell of a lot of people are depending on me and my mother dies that day? It's a week off at least.

There is simply no reason Kenny Bayless shouldn't have been reffing that fight.

I feel bad about his mother, if that's so. But the cold, hard truth is, it doesn't matter because it's not like he's a good referee ordinarily. He's a notoriously incompetent one and those split-second decisions he's gotta make, all refs have to make and he's never any good at them to begin with. Nothing changed about his standard poor refereeing performance. Condolences to him, though.
