something that still amazes me to this day is the difference in joe cortez refereeing style between the hatton - mayweather fight and the hopkins - calzaghe fight.

in the end i don't think his refereeing performance determined who the winners in those fights were but why did he allow no inside fighting at all in the Hatton v Mayweather fight, yet a few months later he let hopkins hold all night against calzaghe without giving him a warning?

for the record, i have respect for all 4 of those boxers and don't want the thread to turn into a slagging match about the boxers.

i just want your opinion on why joe cortez refereed these 2 fights so differently?

Fair play, i guess all we all want is consistency in refereeing. And Joe Cortez was not consistent at all, for that reason i don't rate him highly as a ref.

I am grateful that his dodgy refereeing didn't have an effect on the outcome of the fights. But in other fights it might of.

Cortez is a wannabe Mills Lane...trying to use a catchphrase to get famous.

Hey Joe...it's not about you, it's about the fighters.

I didn't mind his overall idea in the Hatton fight, he just went too far when he actually broke the clinches before they happened. But Hatton's work is often not inside fighting, he's just holding and holding and hitting. We don't need that.

He should have applied something similar in Calzaghe-Hopkins and I suspect we'd have seen a much clearer decision for Calzaghe.

Hr didn't affect the results of the fights but he really affected Ricky mentally in the Mayweather fight, you can just see it,it was there when Hatton began to lose .

hatton looked like a man walking to the gallows on his ringwalk. he knew from the moment he stepped in the arena that night that he was in for an arse whooping.

Like I said it didn't affect the result,I also think Mayweather would have won one way or the other but after the point was taken away Hatton just lost his cool.He just entered every punch Mayweather threw, hell he even took a punch that didn't even exist till then.....IT'S A CHECK HOOK,THAT'S A CHECKHOOK-Manny Steward.
