Speaking on the 10th round alone, I was watching the fight was a room full of people who never once seemed to think the fight should have been stopped. Khan was still moving, and never really seemed truly out of it. I was rooting for Marcos and didn't think it should be stopped.
Cortez may saved Khan from a knockdown once in the 10th, but he did good during the fight. As a Maidana fan I can't use Cortez as an excuse, Maidana had a ton of time to finish Khan and he didn't finished the bout. I saw it even at 113-113.
Joe Cortez did exactly what he was supposed to do. People just like to whine. Not ONE person who has laid eyes on this thread would have done any better, or anywhere near as well, if they were refereeing that fight. Khan was not saved in any way shape or form, and Cortez only broke the action when it was perfectly appropriate.
I like cortez u guys are a bunch of hoes but I kept looking at the corner of the screen to see were cortez was because khan wasnt throwing **** back and like emanuel told taylor vs pavlik dont get on those ropes and not throw punches you dont want the ref to come in and stop it but we know jermaine dosent listen lol
No way should of it been stopped, maybe in the 1st, cause marcos was hurt very bad, an if there was more time in the round, i think he would of been stopped. Maybe a standing eight count (not sure if they were in effect) would of been the right call in rounnd 10, an the fact the cortez broke up marcos aggression when it did not warrent it, i think three times in round 10, one when khan was moving away turned his body, but his hands were still free to defend, an cortez then stopped it at that very important part of the fight. That stop to me could of been very costly for marcos, maybe robbing him of a KO, not saying it would of but, if cortez has to go in to pertect a guy who dosn't no which way to turn, he should be giving a standing 8 count,,,,,, elbow was BS, khan was to doing rabbit punches an holding an hitting, once again that is how i saw it. just dirty on both sides, but yes marcos more so.
After round 10, Cortez went to Khans corner and told him hes got to fight back or hes stopping the fight!....Giving the champion the benefit of the doubt when he is still covering and using his legs is no real harm...However agreed...lots of other ref's would have stepped in..
There you have it. Khan still had his hands up, was still moving, and still throwing back occasionally despite being hurt. If there's a handful of complaints here about Cortez not stopping the Fight, there'd have been a flood of complaints if he had.
I don't think Cortez should've stopped it in the 10th but most refs would have stopped it. Over the past 20 years refs have been stopping fights much sooner. However, I still think Cortez did a terrible job. He seemed to be all over Maidana and didn't do anything to Khan. The part that really annoyed me was Cortez jumping in the 10th when Maidana was trying to finish off Khan. Khan even turned his back on Maidana at least twice and Cortez didn't do a thing! And to the poster who said that no one on this thread could've done a better job than Cortez, so what? He's a veteran professional referee, how can you possibly hold us to the same standards?
Wether or not I agree that the fight should have or would have been stopped, one thing we all agree on, and have for awhile now, is that Cortez is a bogus ref. Not sure whats so hard about getting Bayless to ref all the big fights like this. I really think Cortez might wind up getting booed here soon when he gets introduced.
