I still say that Frazier's arm might have hindered him a bit.

Nice videos, thanks for posting. I wish today's pro athletes would compete against each other like this. Have some boxers, basketball, tennis, NFL, and MLB players compete.

Olympic track and field athletes do a lot of strength and olympic lifting, so no surprise to me.

It would be funny if the other athletes didn't know who he was and though, this guy is weak, I can kick his ass.

I think both of you are right. Lack of good teachers, lack of gyms and the incentives on other sports all have to do with it.

Frazier had a left arm injury that made it hard for him to extend. He couldn't extend certain punches properly and this shortened his left hook (And he claims made it more powerful). You can tell in the video he has trouble extending. Not only that, but it looks like he never picked a weight up in his life. Joe did some physical labor when he lived in the south which gave him a strong back and strong legs. But as you see his technique is awful. As Swamer said, functional strength is not the same as power-lifting strength. I would disagree on his view of Foreman. I think Foreman could probably have more brute strength than someone like Wlad but I'm sure Wlad could lift heavier weights.

They dont have the Superstar competitions anymore, but back in the day i use to watch them every year... The football players always did good.. And the boxers almost always did very poor.... Actually Evander was one of the best out of all the boxers that ever participated. I believe he finished in the top 3 or 4.. Larry Holmes,Joe Fraizer,Aaron Pryor did real poor, usually coming in near to last place. I remember Ray Mancini doing decent, he did better than Holmes,Fraizer,Pryor..... The only guaranteed event that boxers always excelled in was the long distance run, or the bicycle (long distance) events. They usually came in first place but sucked in most events.. Evander did well in the weightlifting i remember he got 3rd place behind Track star Roger Kingdom and suprisingly Volleyball player Karch Kiraly... At this time Evander hadnt been at hw too long, i think he got much stronger later on during his reign.

I remember Holmes did poorly on the weightlifting event... I remember some slender or medium size baseball players lifting more..... Pryor was too small to lift like the football guys and bigger athletes, but i do remember him almost putting up 195 in the military press, he came closer than Holmes did, and im sure he would have put up the 165 that Fraizer couldnt.

I'm pretty sure Primo Carnera could do twice as much as Frazier, but he'd lose to Joe in a boxing match. So lifting weights don't mean **** in boxing.

A former hw champ that would smoke most NFL players in the weightlifting event is Hasim Rahman, he reportedly can bench a ridiculous amount of weight.... I think i heard in the 560 range.

all these people talking about RJJ - please stop it. it is a total myth that he was some great athlete who would have excelled at any sport. he was a great boxer, not a runner.

Pole vaulters have done well. They have to be very fast and strong. I think Bob Seagren won one of he early competitions. As for NFL participants, Jason Sehorn won the superstars two years in a row, if I recall correctly. I would guess NFL running and defensive backs would do very well. Herschal Walker for example should have done well.

Soccer stars are excellent all around athletes as well. Boxing is a very specific skill set.

Mackie Shilstone said that Roy Jones was the greatest athlete he's ever trained.

This is coming from a guy that trained hundreds of professional athletes.

I'm humoured how you think that but Ali thinks the total opposite because he met Frazier in the one place where he most certainly does not suck: the ring.

I've watched a bunch of these on ESPN reruns or on Youtube etc and boxers finished last in these competitions almost every time they were on.

Goes to show you athleticism is not a required trait to be a boxer. Its about mechanics and continual processing of motor function through repetition. Then of course stamina which is obtainable by just about anyone, and mental intangibles not related in any way to athleticism. But those fighters who also were blessed with natural athleticism were that much more successful as boxers, ie Roy Jones, Lennox Lewis, Terry Norris...

Watch the clip of Tyson playing basketball or Fernando Vargas throwing a baseball. Its comedy.
