You are a very good poster and I respect your opinons but I just don't see a way for Brewster here. Those early 2000's sparring sessions at Freddie Roach's Wild card gym were very public and numerous people like Doug Fisher from Ring magazine reported how James Toney who was competing at 190 at the time was knocking his sparring partner Lamon Brewster all over the place and hurting him in the process. This is back when Fischer wrote for Max Boxing. I tried finding some of those stories but couldn't find them on the internet but I do remember them since I am a huge Toney fan. If James was getting to him than I can imagine what Frazier would do to him. Watch the pace that Brewster fights at and then watch prime Frazier. No comparison.
Frazier had not jab and seldom threw an uppercut. He was a left hook guy with a medicare at best right hand who liked to come at his man. Brewster probably hit harder and based on what I've seen has the better chin. While I agree Frazier is faster and has more skill with his hook, he's not taking it as well. Which puncher did Frazier every beat? How come he was hurt quickly on film / stunned / had his knees buckled by medium level punchers, none of whom hit like Brewster can? Frazier fans won't admit it, this is a bad match up for him.
Did you really just say that Cooper deserved to beat Ali? Sure Cooper dropped Ali in the first fight but no way was Cooper even close to beating Ali. Doug Jones gave Ali a close fight but I don't think anyone truly believes he was superior to Ali. Back to the subject at hand, Frazier beat guys like Machen, Oscar B, Geroge C., Quarry x2 and the Version of Ali he beat was not as far shot as you claim. Ali went on to fight at the highest level for another decade against Foreman, Quarry, Norton, Shavers, Young, Spinks etc. Frazier was a great amauter before turning pro in an era when boxers were some of the top athletes in the world. The guy was not a one dimensional overachiever like you claim.
Brewster had excellent, A-level power, but I think Bonavena would just outwork him. Brewster would beat Chuvalo easily though
What was "fishy ,"about the second Cooper stoppage against Ali? What was fishy about the both the Patterson stoppage and the Quarry stoppage? You have seen the ENTIRE Jones v Ali fight? FYI No fights as close as the Young & Norton fights are," bad robberies ,"whichever way they go. Frazier never ,"used the ring or boxed from the outside for obvious reasons",his physical stature demanded he close the distance and get inside, same with Marciano and Tyson. What is your complaint about the Banks fight you werent clear?
Brewster's gas tank starts running dry in the 8th round of a good fight, and Joe starts taking him apart. Brewster ain't Foreman and if he did drop him,he ain't keeping Joe Frazier down....
Frazier hardly threw uppercuts. Frazier best match ups are vs the boxer types without a lot of power. His worst, vs. durable punchers. He's facing a durable puncher here.
I saw the second Henry Cooper vs Muhammad Ali fight on May 21 1966, live on ABC's Wide World Of Sports. The stoppage did not appear Fishy, Cooper got tagged with a chopping right hand, there was a torrent of blood that came from that wound, the referee, George Smith, I believe his name was, stopped the bout in round 6. I remember reading the next morning that the cut inflicted on Henry required 14 stitches. Ali did fight Cooper more cautiously this time around, he took some left hooks but he won it fair and square. Cooper got stopped on Sept 20 1966 by Floyd Patterson.
Could have been my friend but give Ali his dues, he did not toy with Henry in 1966, he had respect for that left hook. But would you have wanted that cut to maybe cause an early end to Henry Cooper's career? I watched it with my Dad and Uncle, at first we felt the same way, but thinking about it, that was a very bad cut. I remember that fight very well, afterward I had to go to the hospital to spend two weeks for treatment of Valley Fever. Of course, I did not want it to end early. The Nurses and Orderlies were talking about all that blood on Henry's face and all over Muhammad Ali. Good point though. The song on the local radio station the was playing was, A Groovy Kind Of Love, by The Mindbenders.
