He was a class act during the Ali era-really showed that it was ok to be humble in
    defeat unlike Ali.

Joe Frazier = no quit, humility in the face of pressure to be arrogant, champ, legend, and a kind man. Get well Smoke.

  6. Advanced liver cancer? Damn, the prognosis is bad.

    Bless you, Smoke.

Its difficult for me to express how I feel after hearing this news.

How odd, that just the other night I replayed "The Mecca of Boxing", which is all about the history of boxing at Madison Square Garden in NYC. How fighters dream to see their name up in lights at The Garden. But the real focus of the documentary was March 8th, 1971. That was THE Fight of the Century & the self-proclaimed Greatest took it on the chin that night by a smaller man with a huge heart & tremendous pride who had something to prove. There was no way Ali was gonna beat Frazier in that 1st bout. All of Ali's talk, belittling Joe, was nothing more than fuel added to the fire. Frazier couldn't believe what Ali had done to him. He needed to shut that mouth once & for all.

Left hook, left hook & another left hook. And by the 15th round, the side of Ali's face looked like a football from catching so many left hooks that night. Then, the icing on the cake. The thunder clap in the 15th round that sent the greatest to the canvas, sealing the victory.

That night...Joseph William Frazier, better known as Smokin' Joe, was The Greatest. The words his fist's spoke did the talking loud & clear, which were worth so much more than the cruel words that had been directed towards him during the build up to the fight.

God bless him, I pray for him. I've read his books, seen his documentaries. Joe Frazier is a legend, one of the best ever and a hero of mine.

This brought a smile to my face during grim times.

Jerry Izenberg is a Brillant sports writer for the Newark Star Ledger, the paper I've read since Johnny Unitas was playing football & Izenberg would interupt the action. He had a style all his own & I loved it.

    Sad.
I used to shout at my baby brother "joe Frazier" to get him to fire away first with just pillows on the couch then later with 16oz gloves.

Joe Frazier epitomizes courage, heart, determination, aggression, pressure, and spirite.

Joe Frazier is boxing. And he's the real Rocky Balboa.
