Can you please explain what relevance the durability of Shavers chin has to this thread?
Your last two sentences contradict each other.:huh

well he stated hat frazier ducked shavers because fraziers chin wasn't that great. like if shavers had a great chin ?? that was what i ment.
i don't see the reason for a fighter like frazier with his style to duck a fighter like earnie shavers was.

Even if Frazier did duck these men (and I don't think he did) it doesn't mean that they would have a snowballs chance in hell of beating him. The only fact is that Frazier did not fight these men.

Foreman was way better than Mac Foster, Ernie Shavers, and even Ron Lyle. Foreman would have needed about 3 1/2 - 4 rounds to beat both Foster and Shavers IMO. He stopped Lyle in the 5th but was dropped.

Why not? That's how the other guys got their reps as big punchers.

Who else ever flattened Foster BTW?

What's the basis for that? Foster only KO'd dead men; Lyle's only big KO at the world class level was Shavers, who Quarry had already KO'd in 1. Other than that, Lyle was either extended or himself KO'd by any top fighter he fought.

Don't know why this thread is still going on. How could he have ducked these guys? Neither was a serious contender when he was champ.

Mac Foster was up and coming when Quarry beat him. Joe then took on Quarry and beat him. A couple fo years later Foster was beat by Ali, whom Joe had beaten.

Lyle* and Shavers were only approaching fringe contender status when Quarry beat them both in 1972.

Incidentally, Lyle tells about how Futch brought him around to Joe's gym when he was coming up. Futch said "I won't let you spar with Joe 'cause he''ll kill you, but I have this guy Ken Norton who you can go some rounds with". Lyle also sparred with Ali around this time, who took it easy with him. Just worked with him.

Joe should've fought Foster and Lyle easily, Shavers a little less so.

Foster did not deserve a shot at Joes title and was out of the top 10 by 71.

Lyle was rated below and beaten by Quarry who Frazier fought to get his final shot at Ali.

Shavers was unrated and not a factor during his active years.

Im not sure why Foster even gets a mention here. He has absolutely zero evidence of being a puncher at the contender level. Literally every time he stepped up and faced anyone who had a name and wast completely shot he got lost in convincingly and didnt exhibit any power. When exactly did he even deserve a shot at Frazier to say Frazier ducked him? He was knocked out in 1970 in his first fight against a warm body and Frazier had already smashed Quarry the year before. Foster also lost to Ali a year after Frazier had convincingly beaten the greatest and lost to Bugner four months after Frazier dropped and beat him.

Quarry had dominated Lyle and knocked out Shavers in 1973 and six months after knocking Shavers loopy in a single round Frazier beat the holy hell out of him and essentially ended his career as a top contender.

Lyle also lost to Ali by KO in 75 and six months later Joe fought Ali. In 1976 Lyle lost by KO to Foreman and five months later Frazier fought Foreman.

Shavers lost to Stander in 1970 by KO. 2 years later Frazier knocked Stander out, brutalizing him in the process.

If anything Frazier was seaking out and beating the best fighters, not avoiding also-rans.

I'm a big fan of Shavers and Lyle, but they were inconsistent and would follow big victories with big defeats. They would have been interesting additions to the 1980's heavyweights, who were also like that. I don't think Frazier ducked them....I think they weren't solidly enough on the map to be considered as big fights for Joe. We've already discussed Quarry as the gatekeeper, and I guess in this context that's what he was....and very effectively.
