I was watching the Joe Frazier - Jerry Quarry 1969 fight and couldn't help thinking whether Ali ever met a Frazier as strong as he was against Quarry? Frazier looked strong across the board in the Quarry fight: quickness, stamina, punch power was great. So what do you guys think. Was Frazier as strong in 1971 against Ali as in 1969 when he faught Quarry?

Yes, definitely. Frazier was as good as he'd ever been in 1971 against Ali. Maybe the '69 version was a tiny bit faster, but in '71 he had a bit more experience. Frazier's fights with Quarry and Ali are classics.

True; one must remember that Frazier was slightly below-par physically for the Ali fight, and was treated for hypertension soon after it. In fact, the fight should have really been delayed, but Frazier's team were keen not to give Ali any more time to improve (or lose/look silly like he did against Bonavena, which could seriously hamper the fight's gross earnings). On the other hand, MENTALLY I think Frazier reached a peak in that fight, both in terms of experience and in terms of sheer willpower.

An aside: I can't believe it took me so long to figure out your avatar, Chris. Jim Carrey's disguise was clearly much better than it seemed when I first saw that film.

    "haters"..:huh

No! I think what is acknowledged is that Frazier looked pretty sharp against Quarry.

No, but some people are saying that Frazier was on the decline when he fought Ali by saying he was "faster, and sharper" against Quarry. Maybe he seemed faster because Quarry was easier to hit than Ali, anyone ever thought about that?

Could be, but what is the point you want to make?

Well, when people say that Ali wasn't in his prime when he fought Frazier (which he wasn't), the haters get mad so they come up with all kinds of BS to make Ali's layoff insignificant i.e. Frazier was past it against Ali even though nothing in or out of the ring occured that would make it possible.

Ali will make people look slower because of his own speed

Didn't he dominate Oscar with multiple KDs and stop him, something Joe failed to do?

And Ali was infinitely better in 1967 than 1971, what's your point?

Ali fans are almost as bad as Tyson fans though. Always wanted to write off a defeat. This was not PRIME Ali, than he goes on and beats the monster Foreman??? Was that Prime Ali???

Same goes with Tyson, Tyson lost to Douglas because he didnt have Rooney.

The first fight, both fighters were NEAR there primes. I think Ali was at worse 87 or so percent at his peak. Best perhaps 93 or 94. Ring rust was not what beat Ali. It was the pressuer of Fraizer. Ali in this fight, seem to cant miss as often. He still landed a good amount of punchings, and even puff up Joe's face. Had it been a lesser version of Ali, Ali may have been stop. I dont write this off as rust.

I don't think it was rust either, it was decreased mobility and to an lesser extent, handspeed. He was still probably 85-90% though.
