Joe Frazier - Jerry Quarry - Muhammed Ali

I actually think Frazier was better in his second fight with Quarry than in his first, and that was after his first fight with Ali.

As for Ali he definitely hadn't recovered in terms of stamina and conditioning after the exile. In his autobiography he points to the second fight against Quarry as the one where he felt that his stamina and conditioning was fully restored (most would say they never were, though).

Personally I would say that Ali was in significantly better shape in the second fight against Frazier. For my money he looked as good in that fight as he ever did, taking the opposition into account. Frazier probably wasn't quite as sharp as in the first fight, though.

 

It was Buster Mathis who had health problems after qualifying to represent the USA. Frazier was the sub for him, and won gold. The reuslt was a coperation Cloverlay was formed to manage Frazier.

BTW, I've only seen a clip or Frazier's Olympic matches. Does anyone have access to the tapes? I'd love to see them.

 

I think Frazier was better in the first. He may have looked better in the second, but i think that was mainly because Quarry was messed up mentally and physically by then. In the first fight, Quarry was a very hard fighter to beat and Frazier did it comfortably.

I do think he looked better in the second Quarry fight than he ever did post Foreman though.
