“Ar 210 pounds Buster would be world champion. At 225 he is dangerous. At 240 I kick his ass, at 300 everybody kicks his ass.”
At 300 pounds, Buster beat Frazier in the Olympic Trials ... with an injured hand, no less. Just saying. When Buster was 267 pounds, he also demolished Chuck Wepner. (Only Foreman really punched out Wepner like Buster did.) His team really tried to shrink Mathis down, and got him all the way down to 220. But you could argue Mathis seemed to lose power the lighter he got. His weight tended to help him.
During the Olympics trials Buster was known for his kind and outgoing nature. He said, "I just want to be liked." He seemed like a sweet guy.
