Marciano defended his title 6 times and 5 of those were against the number 1 contender. If you look at Charles,Walcott,Moore's and Lastarza's record, you would see they beat every good big, small, short and tall heavyweight to get the shot. Marciano defended against the best. I love Frazier but he had a shorter prime and I think Walcott, Moore and Charles would do a better job than Patterson did vs Quarry,Bonavena,Ellis....Frazier did have the Ali win but I think Moore, Charles, Lastarza and Walcott would wreck havok on Chuvalo, Cooper,(the Big Cat that Ali fought) Foley and Terrell,Ramos,Bob Foster, etc.

Ellis is a good win, perhaps Joe's third best win. Honestly though, Walcott is a much better win and a superior fighter. You're crazy for thinking a 47 Louis is only slight better than Ellis and Quarry.

I think Charles/Moore are quite comparable to an Ellis win.

Liston got hit plenty against Ali, and he was definitely what I would call hurt, but given that Foreman ended up flat on his back versus Ali and got hit with a good deal more big shots than Liston did, I think it's fair to say Ali hurt Foreman more than he did Liston, any way you look at it.

And I'm talking about compact Liston. Liston's reach meant he did have slower long punches than most top HW's, mainly because of his protracted gather, but up close he threw fast short punches. This is why getting inside with Liston was always suicide. This colour footage from the Patterson fight is pretty instructive.

The commentator actually names him "very quick for a big man". That was what Sonny was, on the inside.

When did I say that ?

And they both must ranked in Marciano's top 4 wins, IMO.

Considering that Frazier's best win is over Muhammad Ali, and it hands down trumps any Marciano win by a good degree, I think it's clear that Frazier's top 4 or 5 wins clearly top Marciano's top 4 or 5 wins.

And if you want examine depth and second-tier wins, and extend it to top 10 wins of both men, Frazier will come out on top too.
Marciano just hasn't got the depth nor the quality of opposition necessarily the close the gap that Frazier opens with his number 1 win - namely, over ALI. He's playing catch-up from there, and his just doesn't have enough superiority in the remainder of his resume.

Oh, yes he was. Watch some of hits fights. He had the best footwork and fastest feet of any hw ever bar Ali. He had KO power in both hands, great defense, timing, technique, good ring intelligence and he was a quite bit awkward. He had a good chin too. He just ad it everything and when he got his things together age already cought up with him and he still managed to become the hw champ.
Fighting while starving or on short notice of a day does not make you a better fighter, sorry.

I rate Marciano higher than Frazier. Marciano´s achievements outshine Frazier´s, without Ali, Marciano´s resume would be better, Marciano had better longevity and when it comes h2h I think Marciano would beat Frazier, better chin, less predictable defence, power in both ends - also both fighters will probably finished after that one. I rate Marciano somewhere beween 3 and 7 while Frazier rates beween 8 and 11.

Yes, hard lives, but most of them were well managed. Dempsey-Kearns, Louis-Blackburn, Marciano-Goldman, Ali-Dundee, Frazier-Futch, Tyson-D'Amato and so on, and so on. When Walcott finally came under good management he was over 30 and had been out of the ring for some four years. His best years was already behind him. There is no getting around that.

See what you mean. Rocky beat MORE big names, but Joe beat the BIGGEST name. I agree that Frazier would prevail head to head.

I was kind of thinking the same thing,I mean Jersey Joe and Ezzard were a slightly past it but they were still great fighters. Although fraizers win over ALi is better. Bottom line Rocky never lost. Where as Fraizer was knocked out 3X(although to Atg). In a H2H matchup though I might lean towards Fraizer he was on top during an era where the Heavys were Bigger and Athletic, He was also 20lbs heavier which might have made a diffrence.
