"I just think that his whole purpose was to get me scared. I'll go in the jungle, and fight a lion with a toothpick. Therefore, if you ain't got something right to say to me, then you better keep your quiet. Cus imma peel off and hit ya. Because there's nothing for me to but just walk straight. Walk right." Not trying to be too deep, clever, epic or heroic. Just a straight up 'Man quote'. "Nothing for me to do but just walk straight" - He's no great talker, not a witty person like Ali with a larger than life character. I don't know how you value the mental aspect of the game, but its definatley a factor. And Ali had a monumentally great mind/personality that drowns people out, and Frazier was a simple man in comparison. If this sort of gap in attribute was a physical one it'd be a massive ****ing deal for Frazier to be his equal. So i think this was a very powerful and spiritual quote when put into context. Ali is the man and Frazier's sticking it to him. Its Garcon vs the Beast(in Beauty and the beast animated Disney movie). Again i don't mean to bash Ali, but it has to be said... Joe Frazier is a ****ing legend.
Well, Ali rarely said anything meaningful, he just had people whooping with laughter with his schtick act. Frazier has some good quotes.
Ali said plenty of meaningful things. My favourite Frazier quote was from before Manilla. He'd heard some of the detail that had been coming out of the Ali camp concerning what Ali was saying about him. According to Futch he punched a hole in the wall, leapt the couch and told Eddie: "Nobody's stopping this fight. It's him or me."
Probably, but I meant proportionate to the total volume of talking he did. Most of his pre-fight talk was pure light-hearted pap, and was supposed to be taken as such.
I was responding to Pachilles' post. I disagree with his interpretation that Ali was in another league from Frazier generally, as a superior thinker, or deep "spiritual" orator .... to Frazier's inferior wits as a "simple man". No, you don't have to divide anything by anything. Ali did a lot of funny stuff, shouting and joking, poems and stuff. He was brilliant. If you took away everything that wasn't just simple light-heartedly humour and entertainment, the Ali act, you'd be left with far far fewer utterances. And in such a case, I don't think the contrast with Frazier, as Pachilles had it, would be assumed.
Yeah a post almost entirely about Frazier, but the first offerings off your keyboard were negatives about Ali (not stunned). Anyway, whatever pleases you. Here's a beauty from Ali about Frazier to Marvis after Manilla: "Tell your father...all that stuff I said about him - I didn't mean it. Your father's a helluva man. I couldn't take those punches he took tonight."
Ali always said meaningful things, it's just that he said a lot of things that he held little general understanding. Ali wasn't really a smart man, but a man with a lot to say.
Really? He's regretful and respectful. In the theme of the thread he speaks far more highly of Frazier than any of us every could, to his son no less. I know Frazier-Ali is a divisive issue, and I fall firmly on the side of Frazier in that argument, but I always thought this was a great line.
Actually, the post is entirely about Frazier and largely about him compared to ALI. (Which isn't surprising on a boxing forum, since everyone with any knowledge knows that Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali are closely linked in boxing history) Your first offerings off your keyboard were seemingly a contrary retort to my post, rather than your own thoughts on Pachilles' topic. :good
Post FOTC: "I couldnt urinate. I couldn't stand up and walk. I couldn't eat or drink. My eyes were puffed up and sensitive to light. We kept the shades drawn. It also helped to stick my head in a sink filled with ice. It seemed my body had shut down from exhuastion. Once things began to stabilize, and fear of a stroke occuring vanished, come night time I would lace up my shoes, tell the nurse, 'see you later' and slide out the back door to party."
I know. :good And that's why i went on to respond to you, to explain myself further. Which I did, after which you come out with this crap .... atsch
