    'Smokin' Joe Frazier,

Established himself as the 'New Man On Campus' when he 'literally'
destroyed Canadian - George Chuvalo on July 19, 1967 in Madison
    Square Garden.

    The 23 1/2 year-old, 6' 0" 204 lb. 'Philadelphia Bull-Dozer' just
plowed over the 'Certified Heavyweight Cement Block' - George
    Chuvalo by a TKO 4.

Never before, had the so-called boxing pundits seen that kind of
power mixed with speed. A 'Super-Charged Rocky Marciano' is what
    they labeled Joe.

Joe Frazier, now with a record of 17-0-0 (15 KO's) was 'The New Man On Campus'

Referee - Johnny Colan, 'The sound of Joe's punches was frightening. I truly believed
he would have killed George if it went any further. If Joe gets a hold of Clay, he may
cave in that skinny body. It's a good thing he got out of boxing now.'

Joe Frazier 'first' graced the cover of Ring Magazine in June 1967.

Some thoughts by Willie 'The Monster' McMillan a 27 year-old
    Toldeo, Ohio - 6' 0" 182 lb. fighter, with a record of 17-1-0 (7 KO's).

'They asked me to come to Philadelphia to spar with Joe Frazier. I
thought it would be pretty good to get some experience, before I
moved up to Heavyweight from the Light-Heavyweight Division'.

'But when I got to the Philadelphia Gym, I heard this loud thudding noise
coming from a back room. It sounded like somebody busting up concrete
with a sledge-hammer. It was Joe, slamming a heavy-bag pinned to the
wall. I looked at my Trainer Jake, and said, 'l better call my wife and tell
her Good-Bye, because I don't think I'll live through this sparring session.'

Always a good topic for a thread (the quote from Johnny Colan is, of course, fictional).

Under the Marquis for Madison Square Garden

Joe Frazier, The Brown Bomber and George Chuvalo

George Chuvalo was in 'prime condition' after spending several
weeks in intense training in upstate New York.

Some thought that Joe Frazier was 'just not ready yet', and he
was biting off more than he could chew.

He was most likely fading around that point.Certainly a couple of years past it by the time of the first Ali fight, and absolutely shot to **** against George Foreman(not difficult to envision a peak Frazier taking Foreman's best shots and laughing in his face).

    1967

Here Joe Frazier walks into Cassius Clay's 'Exhibition Session' and steals the show.

Joe Frazier wanted to replace Cody Jones in the sparring session. But Cassius said
'Hold on Joe, I'm in the Army now'.
