Maybe Frazier at his best right here. He is fighting a 6'1 218lb very physically strong fighter with a good work rate, excellent chin, and a pretty good punch. Something of a modern day Jim Jeffries. Chuvalo came to fight early on, he is bombarding Frazier with some heavy blows and backing Joe up. He is really taking it to Joe in the trenches. What does Frazier do? He stays relaxed. Takes some big shots, but also makes Chuvalo miss by inches with slick head movement as he makes Chuvalo pay with every hook he lands. He give it right back to Chuvalo, and with much meaner intentions. Frazier really breaks Chuvalo down, and he does it very quickly. Just lights up Chuvalo's face with his very accurate, fast straight hooks. That final left hook which breaks Chuvalo's orbital bone in his eye was one of the best punches I have seen thrown. Chuvalo turned his back, looked helpless, he was seconds from going down. The referee saved his life. NOBODY did this to Chuvalo. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcmMPBT8NAY[/ame]
I also agree this was one of Joe's most impressive performances. Chuvalo was a tough guy and no other fighter, not even Foreman, battered him this bad.
Thanks for the video but to me it didn't look like he was seconds from going down. Any kind of bone fracture is very painfull. RIP Frazier
Enjoyable fight to watch, Frazier was very effective although I think it was the second Chuvalo started throwing the right uppercut with frequency and landed a lot, although it was a sneaky shot and not so much powerful as Joe had him smothered. However it does reveal his weakness. I remember saying to myself. "Someone's told this guy to throw the right hook."
Chuvalo was some kind of tough. One of Fraziers best performances. Rest in Peace, Joe. Thanks for the Vid, Suzie.
Joe's head movement was awesome. Chuvalo's face looks like a mess as early as the second round. ...Looks like it's gone 15.
The angles, the lateral movement. Effective and intelligent pressure. That's the way to pressure a brute strong fighter like Chuvalo. This fight is always the ideal prototype for how Frazier fans wished he had fought Foreman.
Little bit of hyperbole here, but yeah, Frazier did a number on him. Didn't they have put in staples or something afterward to hold Chuvalo's cheek in place? Thanks for the great footage, Suzie. :good
Aside from of course the first Ali fight I've always thought this was Joe's most impressive showing. Chuvalo looked so much bigger and stronger, yet Joe just stood in the trenches and beat his ass into submission. Awe inspiring stuff.
Against foreman, it was blunt trauma for Chuvalo...I really think that he would have made it to the bell had the fight not been stopped...but vs Frazier, he was in, as he said "excrutiating pain" from that left hook to the eye/cheekbone, and he voluntarily turned around and quit from it. By the way, toughness is pretty relative, as Oscar Bonavena, who isn't considered the iron man that Chuvalo is, took everything Frazier had to shell out....twice.
Very impressive performance for Joe. What I noticed by watching this fight is that Frazier had good boxing skills along with his storied left hook. He demonstrates a good jab and right hand as well as good head movement and footwork. This version of Frazier would've been a handful for anyone. How do you think think this version of Joe does against the Marciano that fought Layne? I'm not so sure Rocky takes it. Am I way off base here?
