Frazier at his smoking best from the Fotc v Jeffries from the first Corbett match?. Is Joe to hot here for Jeffries with his constant grinding forward, throwing that cracking hook? Or does the solid Jeffries use that bear like strength to manhandle Frazier? 20 rounds and modern day gloves. Three kd rules apply.
I think that the styles favor Jeffries here. He would be strong enough to push Frazier back, and stop him from getting his feet planted. Frazier would take the early rounds based on hand speed, but Jeffries would pound his body, and tire him out physically. It wouldn't do much for Jeffries looks, but he would walk away the winner.
Jeffries had trouble with movers. Frazier had trouble with guys who could punch, take a punch, and were strong enough to keep him off. Frazier had a high workrate and great stamina. A hw Armstrong. Jeffries wore guys down and kept pressure. Could take a hell of a beating. Both have great left hooks. Fraziers was better. Neither had much of a jab. Frazier was faster and had a bigger punch. The question is, can Jeffries withstand a beating from Frazier long enough to knock him out? Fitz and Corbett couldn't punch or work at the rate that Frazier could. Frazier ko 10.
Jeffries wouldnt see round 10. Frazier comes out smokin and Jeffries is a bloody bruised mess by the time the ref steps in around the 8th or 9th and stops it
Frazier chops him into pulp. Jeffries static, slow burn game plan would backfire resoundingly as he just gets overwhelmed. He would look like Chuvalo after two rounds.
Bonavena is a better comparison than Chuvalo. Frazier couldn't do much with Oscar. Bonavena decked him twice in the first fight and some people gave him the last five rounds in the second. Jeffries would be too strong for Joe.
Jeffries wasn't strong enough to keep 185lbs 5'8" Tom Sharkey off him in 2 fights that went the 20 &25rds distance.Sharkey was crude and open ,Frazier was not ,plus he would be 20lbs heavier than Sharkey. Frazier would be the best 200pounder Jeffries fought before his abortive comeback against Johnson.
Frazier was pre -prime for the first Bonavena fight, and won the second one clearly. 5'8", 185lbs Sharkey went 45rds in 2 fights with Jeffries, and many thought he deserved at least a draw in one fight.
I don't see Jeffries seeing the last round. Whilst Jeff may have been strong, Frazier s like a machine. He takes it to Jeff from the start and by the tenth hes a broken man.
Anytime this subject has been broached I always say, see Frazier-Chuvalo. Jeffries was a more primitive version of Chuvalo, who was lauded for his ability to handle punishment. This is not a virtue in a fight with Frazier, this is a hangman's noose. I don't see any difference in the ending. Frazier in 4.
Attrition fighting is not a great approach to fighting Frazier. The most gifted heavyweight of all time tried it and despite all his gifts lost once and almost died another time.
Jeffries said he had terrible trouble with Sharkey because ."Sharkey was all over you and at you all the time". How would he fare with Smoking Joe's constant pressure?
Joe Frazier was either #1 or Champion in Ring's Annual ratings for 6 straight years. The guy who held the "Champion" position from him he finally beat when the opportunity arose. He holds the greatest victory in the division's history. What don't people get?
