I'm a huge fan of Larry's, but even I completely agree he lost that first fight. On the second fight I'm always surprised by anyone who thinks that fight was Michael's...Larry landed that right hand again and again, and almost had him out of there in the late round. Spinks only won five rounds in that second fight on my score card. The judges bore a grudge for Holmes' Marciano remarks.
That's a similar scenario (both Foster and Spinks were terrific light heavies, almost like the Thomas Hearns of that division, at heavy they weren't so good).
I scored the first one for Holmes by a point but I have no problem with Spinks winning. It is a fight that could have gone either way. The 2nd fight way a high way robbery.
I was a little surprised at the first fight that the judges didn't give the usual champion's benefit of a doubt. The second fight featured Spinks at times being knocked all over the ring (still can't believe how the biased announcers tried to play it off like "it's hard with Spinks' style to tell when he's hurt"...uh, no people...Holmes' Marciano remarks can't cover up the obvious fact that Michael was at times having trouble staying off the canvas). He was hurt at least half a dozen times in that fight, while Holmes (the aggressor throughout) wasn't hurt once.
I do not understand how anybody could score the 2nd fight for Spinks.Holmes closed the show in the 15th round leaving absolutely no doubt in my opinion. One of the worst robberies I have ever seen
I don't understand how anyone could score the first for Holmes. He looked slow and terrible. Spinks won the last round of the rematch on the vast majority of cards I've seen. The rematch was close. My feeling at the time was that Holmes won. He was much better than the first fight. I'm not sure if these two fights were in our fight of the week or whatever it was labelled.
I scored the 1st fight for Holmes myself. As did the Associated press who scored it 144-141 Holmes. The Uofficial UPI scorecard did as well with a scorecard 146-141 Holmes. I myself had it a little closer at 143-142. Still it was a close decision that could've gone either way. The 2nd fifht however was a blatant robbery. One of the worst I've seen.
Funny enough in the 2nd fight one had Spinks winning and the other a 1 point Holmes win. Unofficial AP scorecard: 143-142 Holmes Unofficial UPI scorecard: 143-142 Spinks those above are the scores they had in Holmes - Spinks 2 so judging by those scores they think in the second fight Spinks did better I guess. Holmes fought much better in the 2nd fight but he got out to a big lead and then slowed down and Michael came on. I think Spinks won both fights. The first by a few rounds. The second by 1 point. But their were very close rounds throughout so I have no argument with someone having it a couple of points the other way. So I can’t call it a robbery. For the record yes Frazier would wreck Spinks.
The ONLY question i would have regarding this bout would be if Frazier took Spinks head completely off.
I think the big difference between the Tyson wipeout and Frazier would be the fact that more often than not Joe came out so much slower. Spinks would quickly find Joe's (prime) defense to be far better than it looked in the FOTC. He'd land some punches, but they would be pretty inconsequential to a guy who just kept getting up against Foreman (even when he was shot), and took a really nasty fusillage from an under 30 Ali. The knockout round would expose just how lightweight Spinks' chin really was...no way could he not crumble under that barrage of hooks. Uh-uh.
