Was debating this match with a friend of mine.

I think Charles takes a phenomenal beating. He has enough heart to stay in the fight longer than is good for him, and not quite enough firepower to keep Frazier off of him.

This fight prime for prime would be a toss-up, Frazier could apply the pressure and power-hook but Charles was cagey and tough. If Charles fought defensive of the left hook he could make it tough for Joe, either way competitive IMO

I don't see Charles doing much better than Jimmy Ellis did ... Frazier was an absolute animal and only monsters could hold him off .. Charles was a terrific fighter but at heavyweight he is severely outgunned.

Was any version of Charles better than the Ali of '71?

I can't see it myself so the 69-71 Frazier eventually busts him up imo.

Charles was a great fighter but was just an overblown light-hvy. Remember what Frazier did to Bob Foster, who was also a great light-hvy? I don't think Charles does much better.

I don't see any "boxing type" of opponent beating Frazier. Only with high-end power you can beat him. Don't think Holmes can do it, either. Frazier was relentless.

Over the championship distance of 15 I think Smoke is a bit too relentless for Ez. For 10 or so rounds I see it as a close one but Joe eventually rolling over Charles, with the last few rounds becoming progressively more painful for Ez.

A 10-5 sort of decision or possibly Frazier being dragged off an exhausted, swollen but complaining Charles.

    A quite possible scenario imo.

I see him doing as well as the unranked Buster Mathis did , going 11 rds and remember the referee had the fight level at the time of the stoppage, with one other judge making it 6-4.:think

I'm in agreement with a few other posters. You want to beat Frazier, you have to have power. Ali, it could be said barely made it out of a couple fights with Frazier. Ezzard is great, but Frazier is a beast who can beat him down over rounds, or with a great left hook end it early.

I feel Frazier would rip him a part. Charles was a master but I don't think he or practically anyone his size would have the stuff to hold off Frazier. The fight would be great for as long as it lasted and I think Charles would do good in the early rounds but I see Frazier really breaking him down in the mid rounds and probably stopping him between the 8-12. Anyone under 200 if you ask me gets beat by Frazier.

I don't. Mathis was big, strong and moved against Joe. He was heavy but tough. The bulk did not hurt. Charles traded more and would get hurt. Not see him doing better than a ellis or maybe even Foster.

I love ezzard charles and rate him number one at light heavy but I can't see him giving 20 lbs to the Frazier who stamped on Ali.
I can't see any 185lb fighter beating Joe Frazier !!!

    Its another entirely plausible scenario.

I believe Charles would do better than Bob Foster who never showed he was an effective heavyweight. Not good enough though.

Frazier would win probably by stoppage somewhere in the mid rounds. Joe applied so much pressure and cut the ring off well. Frazier was pretty damn fast moving in. Once he started Smokin Charles couldn`t keep him off.
