First of all I did not single you out ... however, your initial position, which you shifted, could be read as there not being truly skilled fighters at a point in time because it was not a "profession" and I beg to differ based on facts .. yes the sport graduated w Dempsey as he was it's greatest calling card but he himself was from an era packed with gyms all over the country and fighters trying to make a living at it ..
Meanwhile back at the ranch..... Prime Joe takes out Prime Jack. Joe's rep suffers from the fact that he had a relatively short prime due to health issues.
i favor joe frazier, i think his chin is underrated here as is his speed. Dempsey never fought anyone as good as foreman and foreman would most likely roll dempsey over in the same fashion.
After seeing Fraziers body ignoring his head on more than a couple of occasions - see the way he buckles involuntarily from a shot (partially hidden) from Jerry Quarry in the first round of there first fight - as well as seeing him hit the deck in an absolutely flash from a Bonavena right hand and then get sent reeling back down again by a Bonavena left - and then him being staggered to his shoes for a third time in a fight where if I'm not wrong the three knockdown rule was in effect definately has me thinking that were he to go in there against Dempsey then Eddie Futch would've had to insist on a waving of the 3 knockdown rule at the very least! Obviously Frazier did the yo yo routine against Foreman aswell but then Foreman obliterated everyone - that being said even a lummox like Ron Stander got Fraziers attention a couple of times so everytime Dempsey lashed out I'd be looking for the reaction in Smokin Joes knees - it is true he could soak up a tremendous amount of jabs and rights and uppercuts from Ali til the cows came home and he'd refuse to budge from Ali Full stop...but taking jabs and right hands from Ali was one thing...taking total vicious brutal savage shots from a tear-up artist like Jack Dempsey is something on a totally different level of power to Ali - I get the feeling from the way his legs reacted when he got caught a good un he may have been steered carefully around certain punchers where possible - my only other bug bare with Frazier was I found him very predictable to watch certainly - you can almost time when his shots are coming and it was usually one at a time building up to the big one which was usually when he got to that third shot which he'd really dig in almost like he had to work up to that leverage - too many of the limited guys he fought simply fell into his bag and went along with what he liked...going ear to ear with him and slugging inside - I think it would be Dempsey's speed and ability to blaze away coming in from just far enough out which would result in Frazier having to take his lumps - speed wise I think Dempsey would make Frazier look VERY sluggish and I don't think Dempsey would give Frazier the time of day to build up his shots - I just see Dempsey as all wrong for Frazier - Dempsey to stop Frazier inside 6 rounds possibly when the knockdowns start to happen Futch might jump in were the ref not to call it
I see Frazier being a hard target for Dempsey to zero in on. Dempsey's not a jabber and a fast of feet mover like Ali was. There's enough nonsense on this forum about Joe not having a right hand too. He banged Bonavena, Chuvalo, Ali and Quarry with it, especially in the second fight. Dempsey was very tough and hits hard with both hands, but I'm talking about the Frazier just prior to the FOTC. I think he'd set a pace that Dempsey wouldn't be able to circle, counter and keep up to as easy as some here are saying. Prime Joe would stay low and work the angles, rip hooks to the body with both hands repeatedly and break his man down. This would be a great fight either way.
