I know I'll probably get crucified by some for this, But Jerry Quarry would've given Marciano , Johnson , and Dempsey pure hell, if not beaten them . Unfortunately for him , he came along when the heavyweight division was at its strongest in history, with 3 Atg's and some of the hardest punchers in history ( He beat one of them) and best fighters in the history of the heavyweight division. Quarry was a heck of a good fighter.
Jerry Quarry probably had the right idea there of how to beat Joe Frazier. He just did not have the punching power to pull it off. As George Foreman showed later, it was the right plan. From films I have seen I would say Jerry Quarry was a pretty good fighter.
Tbh, I clicked on the vid for a quick check of the quality. That was it. I couldn’t not watch the whole thing. Riveting from go to whoa. Beautiful enchantment and the audio pick up is terrific. That was one of those fights where you feel every punch yourself. An absolutely brutal, sheer slugfest. I have to wonder what the punch count was and how Frazier didn’t even cop a mark on himself. Thanks so much for linking it. I really enjoyed it.
The consensus from alot of people in the game in his era is he would have been champion in any other era but he was born a few years too late
Quarry was a very good fighter but the talk of him being one of the best to never win the title in my opinion is a reach ... I don't see him being any of the mentioned but that aside he was brave as hell, took a terrific shot and when in shape had multiple levels of game to make tough fights for a lot of match ups ...
You are 100% correct. The similarities in the two plans were that both had the correct ideas of trying to take Joe Frazier out early (or at least hurt him badly), and before he had a chance to get warmed up and into the fight.
I agree 100% with you. Quarry was a dangerous dude and an elite counter puncher that would be a problem for any banger.
