as an aside, I understand there was sometimes confusion between Memphis Al Jones, and Florida Al Jones they actually fought each other and i suspect it was something of a commontators nightmare (?)

Thanks for the video. Never saw that Frazier fight before.

Eddie Futch tells a story about this fight. Joe knocked out a fighter named Chuck Leslie and in the dressing room after the fight the promoter offers him Memphis Al Jones a week or so later.

Mr Futch had never seen Jones but was able to analyze his style based on a small snippet he had seen from report of his fight against Jerry Quarry. He knew that Jones was 6-2 201lbs.

He sent Frazier after his body. He knew Joe could wreck him downstairs.

Once Eddie Futch came on board Joe Frazier really perfecting that bob and weave. He was able to zone in the body even more.

I recall reading Joe saying that Yancy liked the spotlight and took the credit for Joe's progress but that Eddie was the one who actually trained him.

It looked like the right hand Joe landed on Jones towards the end was the finisher. It reminded me of the hard right he landed on Quarry towards the end of their first go.

Joe started with Yank. Durham taught him the basics. Yank Durham was smart enough to bring Eddie Futch in. Eddie Futch let Yank Durham take the credit for most of Joe`s success.

After the first Bonevena fight Mr Futch quit his job at the Post Office and worked with Joe full time. He realized that Frazier would need to start bobbing and weaving if he was going to survive against bigger fighters.

He not only taught Joe to bob and weave like nobody had ever before but he taught him to do it in an unpredictible pattern.

The younger Frazier was much more mobile.

Ali would have had a handful no matter when they fought.
