I think that Lyle has all the tools to beat Frazier. The size, strength and punch. But I don't think he would. I think he would maybe floor Frazier, but I ultimately think Frazier stops him. Thoughts?

Frazier breaks Lyle down for the stoppage. Might take several rounds to do it though and Joe might take a few good shots along the way

Precisely how I see it,Magoo. But I would give Lyle a good chance if the bout had taken place after Manila.

Prime Frazier beats Lyle up in every round for as long as it lasts/takes. Lyle I think is romanticised because of his war with young Foreman, a Foreman who with the 20/20 vision hindsight gives us was probably in the midst of an existential crisis. I think pre Ali, young Foreman isn't phased by Lyle and stops him in a rather thudding, methodical beating. Frazier by KO for me

I have a lot of time for Lyle, but he’s taking a solid beating from Frazier here.

January 24, 1976, was not the seminal moment in heavyweight boxing history, but to some folks I guess it is.

Not sure why you took my post to suggest it was? My point was, and remains, that Lyle gets a huge amount of credit for his rock em sock em robot fight against Foreman, who was likely damaged goods by then. He had a really good record and was a really good fighter. I just think Frazier was a level above him.

IRL Lyle gets destroyed in 5-8 rounds.

Forum Lyle stops Frazier in 2 in a more dominant fashion than Foreman did.

You posted this sentence: "Lyle I think is romanticised because of his war with young Foreman, a Foreman who with the 20/20 vision hindsight gives us was probably in the midst of an existential crisis."

I was trying to completely agree with and amplify your comment, and poke at the romanticzers who actually DO treat 1/24/76 as one of the great moments in heavyweight boxing history because they're in love with Ron Lyle, mentioning him in the same breath with people like Joe Louis, for whatever reason, whether it was his big punch (I'm on record here that people on this forum are bewitched by big punchers) or his compelling life story (which as I've noted in a few posts has been called into question by some sources).

I guess I lacked clarity in my post.

And I'll take the opportunity to remind everyone that even damaged goods Foreman was dominating Lyle in every round but the fourth, and if the referee hadn't screwed up had a shot to end it in the second.

I know they sparred in the early 70s. I don't know what happened but I know Ron Lyle always held Joe Frazier in the highest of esteem. Lyle was a gentlemen whenever he spoke of Frazier it was in glowing terms.
One time he said that "Joe Frazier had everyone's respect in the top 10".

Frazier stops Lyle in 9 rds in 74
