Joe Frazier vs Sonny Liston

As other posters mention, fighters like Frazier were just taylor-made for the likes of Liston and Foreman.

I give advantage to Liston in this one. Sure, Frazier has an opportunity, but he will have to accept a lot of punishment.

 

Foreman was not faster than Liston by any means, certainly not the late 50s liston.

Niether was foreman....they just bulldozed frazier outta there by having a massive strength and two fisted power advantage. Frazier is not durable enough to handle a liston level puncher.

Foreman was no great mover, and liston is certainly harder to hit than foreman and a much better overall fighter than foreman.

I dont know why you keep brining up the ali fights...Ali fought a complete different style than Frazier. The closest thing liston fought to frazier was patterson and the closest thing frazier fought to liston was foreman. All evidence points to this being a horrible matchup for frazier...A comeforward aggresive swarmer going to get eaten alive by a stronger more powerful slugger.

FYI Frazier quit on his stool against Ali too and that with only ONE round to go...so I dont see why you keep brining this up???

 

Liston takes care of frazier somewhere around the 9th. Styles make fights and frazier is made to order for liston. Liston was too big and strong and hit too hard. I couldn't envision frazier handling sonny on the inside and absorbing those heavy shots all fight long. That was fraziers style and against liston he would pay dearly for it.

 

power is the last thing to go. Yes Liston may have backed up Foreman but that was also a very young and green Foreman. And besides what does that prove? How does backing up Foreman prove Liston was more powerful?

Whose to say Liston wasnt forced to retire on his stool? Willie Reddish did not want him to come out. Perhaps Liston did not have a say either....Ill say this...Frazier in manilla had alot better chance of winning the ali fight if he came out for round 15 than liston did if he came out for round 7 vs Ali

 

It certainly proves foreman was not more powerful than Liston.

Dick Saddler also said Marciano would have beaten Foreman, so how much stock do you put into his words?

Foreman was considered the most powerful hw champ by Louis and Dempsey. I am not saying u have to listen to them but it is significant. I do think Liston stops Frazier but certainly not the way Foreman did.

 

I mean probably. Liston was a old fat **** then LOL....But prime for prime I strongly believe Liston takes out foreman...but thats another thread.

 

I also think Liston would box cautiously until George gets tired, then ko him late. However if Liston tried to trade with Foreman early, imo sonny may get stopped.

 

Liston by early-to-mid-round stoppage. His short left hook and upper would work beautifully in this fight.

 

Very, very, VERY hard match to call. Liston has the great jab, Frazier will keep coming forward. I think Liston decides to fight on the backfoot in the later stages and use his skill, but Frazier overcomes some rough patches and wins a razor thin decision over 15.

But I wouldn't nessecarily go agaisnt Liston either. HARD FIGHT TO CALL IMO

 

I think Foreman's power gets severely UNDERRATED these days. He was a massive puncher, and certainly a harder puncher than Liston IMO, and definitely harder than Marciano.
