Head to head,Frazier would have beaten Rocky, imo. Do n't know about Joe being better in all dpartments though. Rocky had the better right hand, and was a faster starter than Joe,so Marciano would have been handing out a bit of a battering early on. Joe would have caught him up by the halfway point, and would have stopped a rocky Rocky by the ninth or tenth.

    Two completely different fighters...

Marciano pressured out of an unorthodox leaning stance, using constant feints to create openings for his right cross.

Frazier pressured out of a traditional high guard with lots of movement, looking to slip his opponent and score with left hooks over the top.

They were both short and had great stamina, but that is fairly superficial. Perhaps Pacman belongs in the discussion. :nut

Frazier could go undefeated in Rocky's era theoretically...and vise versa. I don't know, he was more predictable than Maricano by nature and workrate dependent, he was easy to time but hard to hold off unless you had big time power...someone like Jersey Joe Walcott could be a very difficult match up for him.

Pretty much agree with that. Rocky Marciano just that little bit better Joe Frazier...both absolutely great fighters though...the kind of guys you'd want on your side.

Interestingly, there's an interview with Ali on YouTube where he states that he thought The Rock was better than Joe.

Like you said, Frazier does very well against the divsion's best boxers, including Larry Holmes and a 70's Ali, who I'd pick to beat Marciano. As for punchers, the only one who really beat him was George Foreman, and frankly I can't see Marciano doing any better against George than Joe did. The best fighters Frazier beat were either prime, or closer to prime than the best men Rocky defeated. While I think that this thread is not too be taken seriously, I do agree with some of the author's points that Joe's handspeed, workrate, and added size make him more formidable. The left hook is a tool that many greats struggled with, and Frazier possesed one of the very best in heavyweight history. I don't know where to rate his chin. On one hand, he got blasted out in two rounds by an all time great puncher, but on the other, he was capable of going 15 rounds and taking numerous accurate shots from the best boxer of all time, something that a lot of men couldn't. Rocky's whiskers were tough, but I don't know if his chin was any better. He never fought a slugger like Foreman, but was decked by the likes of Walcott and Moore, so who knows? I'm guessing they're very close in the chin department.
