I often find myself trying to figure out where in Heavyweight history I place Joe Frazier. He is hands down my favorite athlete, I have read his autobiography, seen every show on him, and even ran into him once in Philly. I think I find it so hard to rank him because I favor him so much that I tend to put him always near the top. My list of top ten greats generally places Frazier right around 7 or 8. His accomplishments as a boxer should speak for itself. Olympic gold medal, first heavyweight to win the gold medal to go on and become heavyweight champion of the world, and the first man to beat Ali. Even though his career wasnt very long in terms of length and number of fights, the only 2 men he ever lost to were Ali and Foreman. I do believe that Frazier was robbed in his second fight with Ali and the Foreman fights were just a nightmare for Fraziers style. As early as his 12th pro fight he was fighting and beating such notable boxers as Oscar Bonavena and Eddie Machen (who went the distance with Liston) the fight right after. The thing that always amazes me about Frazier was his conditioning. Of all the Frazier fights the only time Ive ever seen him tired was in the final rounds of the Thrilla in Manilla. Just wanted to see what the general opinion of him was on here and hear some peoples insight.

Frazier would not have beaten the prime Ali of 66-67, and could never beat Foreman because of the style match-up, but he was the 3rd best of that era. Of the last 50years, here is my list of top heavyweights.

    1 -Ali
    2- Holmes
    3 - Liston
    4- Foreman
    5 -Frazier
    5 - Lewis
    6 - Bowe
    7- Holyfield
    8 - Norton
    9 - Quarry
    10 - Wladamir Klitchko

Sorry, Dempsey was supposed to be number 9.
    Not Jack Johnson twice.

  8. sonny liston did beat a 188 pounder patterson and cleveland williams(not a great thing), end of the history. george foreman is the oldest hw champion of the world, he destroyed joe frazier and prime norton(they both did beat ali) he did beat chuvalo, goyo peralta, ron lyle, in his 40s he did beat gerry cooney, bert cooper, maguila rodriguez, michael moorer, he was competent against prime holyfield , liston was knocked out by a bum martin. foreman is above liston by a mile.
joe frazier did beat muhammad ali once and he was competent in the 3 fights. frazier did beat bonavena,quarry,ellis,chuvalo.. joe frazier is above liston hands down.
quarry was a great contender but he is not top 10.
larry holmes did several defenses(to life or death) but against who?.... berbick? 137 years old ali? past prime norton? past prime shavers? weaver?smith? snipes?gerry cooney?evangelista?occasio?ledoux?marvis frazier? :admin

Joe Frazier I would rate firmly in the top 20 heavyweights of all-time.

I'd rate him above Holyfield, Lewis, Tyson, above Charles, Walcott, Patterson. Above the Spinks brothers and the Klitschko brothers. Above Jess Willard and Tommy Burns.
    Probably above Holmes.

I have a hard time separating him from Tyson, Liston and Holyfield. Which means near the bottom of the top 10 or right outside of it.
