Joe Frazier: Where Do You Rate Him?

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MrBristerUSMC13, Nov 22, 2010.

  1. to put liston above men like foreman, jack jonhson, jim jefries, marciano, frazier or holyfield is simply stupid and ridiculous.
liston did beat just a great fighter but 188 pounder and with weak chin floyd patterson and cleveland williams(not a great thing). end of the history

Frazier's win is quite clearly better. Absolutely.

But he was at his peak and Ali was past his prime. Holyfield was just as past his prime as Tyson and beat him more decisively. That's why I don't think there's light years between these wins. But I do rate Tyson higher than you do on the other hand.

Tyson was PRIME! He only a young 29 yrs old FFS!! He had ALL of his SPEED, head-movement, combos And power left IMO. He looked V.good VS Manthis And looked his BEST ever in Bruno2 fight And 33/1 Fav at teh bookies.

Holyfeild was 34 yrs Old And 5 yrs Past-Prime, lost his foot-work And speed, Old Vander got nastly out-boxed by Mikey Moorer in 1994 AND KTFO by flabby no-training, Bowe in 1995. :deal

I think Holyfield was possibly MORE past his best than Tyson was, but that in no way make his win any closer to beating an undefeated Muhammad Ali the way Frazier did.

Frazier's win was clear enough, against an undefeated and truly great opponent. Yes, Holyfield knocked Tyson into next week, but Tyson had been KO'd before.
In terms of quality, Ali was light years better than Tyson, and Frazier's performance was easily as impressive as Holyfield's.

Yes, you're right, you must be rating Tyson considerably higher than I do.

I love joe frazier, he was without doubt an atg and based exclusivly on his 67-71 peak a genuine top 10 all time great. my overall rating on frazier unfortunatly includes the rest of his career that was also at the top level. here he sits at #18 according to my system of rating fighters cheifly on their record in linear title/key fights.

One criteria on which Frazier rates verry high, is the worst opponent ever to beat him e.g. Foreman and Ali.

The only lineal champions that can compare to this, even excluding losses verry early or late in thie careers are:

    Jeffries
    Marciano (by default)

    I think thats it.
