Why does it seem he's never recognized as a gold medalist. Foreman and Ali were but you never hear about Frazier winning Gold.
Frazier was 3-0 ( 3 Ref stop contest results ). He meet Hans Huber from Germany ( Germany ) in the finals, and the match was close. Frazier won it 3-2 in the eyes of the five judges. Frazier was the replacement for Buster Mathis who had an injury and could not attend the Tokyo Games.
He's not really touted as a Gold Medal winner because he reminds us so much of a throwback era. Hotshot amateurs are seen as glamor boys, lots of backing, pomp and circumstance, etc...........Frazier was simply blue collar from beginning to end, which is more reminiscent of a tough breaks kind of fighter who got to where he is by having to learn hard lessons in run down gyms and smoky, forgotten fight clubs while fighting for pennies.
@Mendoza Hans Huber - Joe Frazier`s Opponent in the Final of 1964 - came from Regensburg (my hometown). Before his career as a boxer he was a good wrestler who only lost to Wilfried Dietrich, the gold medalist of 1960.
Dietrich was a load. Won medals in both disciplines if I remember. And supplexed Chris Taylor which is awe inspiring. There's that famous pre match hug.
