Just watched a few of Joe Frazier's fight and realised he threw about 4-5 left hooks for evrey right hand. Has any fighter as great as him ever been as reliant on a certain type of punch as he was?
Holmes with the jab and Gerry Cooney also threw his left hook quite a bit, but I agree with you about Frazier. The centerpiece of his arsenal.
Frazier was limited to a left-hook. His right arm had been damaged as a kid.. his right shoulder. Full entension of his right arm had been stuffed up.
Perhaps Max Schmeling. He didn't have a great jab and I can't recall him causing much damage with his left.
Actually it was his left arm that he threw the hook with that never healed properly after being broken as a child.
Nope. You knew Frazier was going to try to break you down and throw the left hook, but stopping it took a great fighter with the right style.
I heard and read the same thing about his left arm. He had a childhood accident on the family farm in the hog pen. He broke his arm at the elbow, landing on a brick, and was never able to fully extend on a jab, even though he threw solid jabs out of a crouch having a fairly straight arm. Joe's left hook was his bread and butter punch, but those who say his right hand is nothing significant is wrong. Sure, he forgot about his right hand against Foreman, but he landed some pretty good ones against Quarry, Bugner and Ali in the FOTC rematch.
