Joe Frazier's resume is underrated

I agree. I rank him highly. Top 10 for me.

Frazier's biggest issue is lack of big wins over punchers. I feel that Frazier would have beaten Lyle and Shavers, but he doesn't have those wins.

However, Frazier's wins are better than Holmes, Tyson, Marciano, Dempsey, and many others. This is not to say that I rank him higher than Holmes, but I will take Frazier's resume over Holmes.

Wins over Ali, Quarry, Bonavena, Ellis, Bugner and Machen are excellent. One of the better resumes in heavyweight history.

A win over a 29 year old Ali is better than any individual win by Marciano, Holmes, Tyson, Lewis, Dempsey, Louis.

Frazier rates somewhere between #7 and #10 on my all time heavyweight list. He was a wonderful fighter- great left hook, great stamina, was the best body puncher, and had great heart.

He had obvious limitations- not a big right hand to the head, lack of win over big punchers (though I think he beats any puncher in his era except Foreman)

Still ATG. Gets underrated due to his losses to Foreman.

 

He has top 10 resume in my opinion, but I'm not sure if he's underrated. Most people have him in top 10 anyway.

 

Machen was unranked,Jones was unranked,Foster was never ranked at Hvy,Ellis was unranked 2nd fight.

 

I well and truly think that if you take away his Ali win, he's still a top 15/20 HW.

 

I have him about no 12.

 

Defendable, if you have Louis and Ali at the top, it's probably arguable to mix and match the right names in any order.

 

Interesing, I don't think there is a reason to have him below top 10. Could you show your top 10?

 

When you say unranked you they fell out of the top 10?
Machen was a very good heavyweight who had slipped from contention but he was a dangerous guy for greenish Frazier. I think Quarry got beaten by Machen. Overall Machen was a quality win at that stage. Jones? Eh..he was a good fighter but nothing to put at the top of the resume. Doug Jones seems to get elevated because he rocked Clay and he was from New York.

 

Joe Frazier is the greatest of all time. Nobody compares. Joe Frazier was the first fighter to win Olympic Gold as a Heavyweight and Gold as a pro.
If you look at Joe's record he starting facing the top fighters in the heavyweight at about 12 pro fights. He didnt have the luxury of 25 or 30 tomato cans to help him look spectacular. Joe put in work in the Philly gym wars. He learn but he paid to learn. Those gym wars dont do much for longevity.
One last comment on Frazier. After Manila he decided to he wanted to fight again. He was faded pretty bad but does he go out and dust off decent fighters? He fought George Foreman, no tune up. That is why he is respected so much

Joe fought alot more than Wlad. No comparison. For example go to the gym and fight a round the way Joe Frazier did. 3 minutes, no holding and definitely no looking around for your older brother. Next day do whatever it was Wlad was doing. Joe career was shorter but he fought much more. I guess he didn't feel the need to be the cure for insomnia.

 

I think Frazier could rank anywhere from 3-10 but closer to 3. The Foreman first fight causes people to underrate him. His style and Foreman’s meant that his stylistic nightmare would be a quick fight vs. a lot of guys stylistic nightmare is a wide points loss. Maybe that factors in?

 

I think Joe has a pretty strong resume. I've been looking at a few of his fights and he only lost to the best. I wouldn't underrate how good a fighter he was, I'd likely have him top 10, he's in that area.
