Gallaghers out of his depth at this level. Linares upped his game 100% and joe and crolla had no answer. I mean what even was his gameplan? All that talk of 'studying Linares fights', 'picking holes' and keeping crolla 'locked away', what ever for? To just do exactly the same thing as you did in the first fight? Got to do better than that with a man like Linares in front of you
This is matchroom's fault in regards to Morrison, they keep feeding prospects bums to beat on and get a good ko percentage but then when they step in with a game fighter they usually capitulate. In regards to Crolla, he was shown the levels and really had no plan b just like all Gallagher fighters.
I'm glad question marks can finally be raised about training in the UK. Too many boxers have simply terrible technique and, instead of developing head movement and good footwork to move sideways and away from danger or picking good angles to punch, end up simply brawling toe to toe with their opponents. It really is no surprise boxers are being found wanting so regularly when stepping up in competition.
actually its more to do with matchroom signing bad fighters, of course they will sign your british standouts but then they will sign pretty poor prospects and feed them cans because they are ticket sellers this includes frank buglioni, jake ball(who got knocked out by jj mcdonagh) Marcus morrison, Ted Cheeseman etc/ the thing that annoys me is there are tons more talented boxers in the uk and ireland who would love the opportunity these poor fighters are given, hearn never signs irish fighters apart from katie taylor
I agree. Yes there was a game plan, it's the same one JG has for nearly every big fight.. Do nothing for the first half of a fight, keep it tight, try to take as little damage as possible and hope your opponent blows himself out or tires out come on strong in the last third of the fight.
I actually think Morrison would have been able to beat Wellborn if he had the right fights before but he clearly was in deeper than he thought he would be. Your right they do sign poor fighters too, not sure what Irish standouts your talking about, Conlan? Barnes? Both great amateurs before didn't look special in their pro debuts.
Ted Cheeseman is a good fighter. Ppl are quick to criticize yet never stepped in a boxing ring. And people don't understand that skills don't always outdo a high stamina more durable fighter. You can have all the skills in the world but if your fitness isn't upto scratch you're in trouble. I just think there's more intangibles people ignore. Lots of ams look terrible in the pros. Skillful operators but get found out over an 8 to 10 round distance. I will say there's a lot of boxers who just don't have the spite or the killer in them. The promoters and trainers lie to them etc rather than being honest. Gallagher trains his fighters to look too set and lathargic that being said. It's like he doesn't show them old school stuff like shifting, not moving in straight lines, cross armed defense, how to properly switch stances, pacing, setting traps, gameplan...etc... All that stuff is alien to Gallagher. Crolla had a high guard he wasn't using effectively to press. He doesn't know how to cut off the ring and is too tentative. Teach him how to brawl on the inside. Crolla doesnt have the killer in him albeit he was up against an elite boxer. Too nice for his own good. Abel Sanchez gets a lot of stick on here but he's a proper boxing trainer. Gallagher i feel probably doesn't let his fighters express themselves enough to hone their craft to break out and be an individual stylish boxer rather than some generic ultra set conventional boxer like all his trained boxers are. Also Callum Smith gets by because of his genetics, height, reach,...etc... He's still a quality fighter tho.
Think it's harsh to slay the trainer if your fighter can't keep up with someone who is clearly elite. Linares runs rings around lots of people doesn't make their trainers ****. Sometimes you can even compete with your man Can't see any tactics that would allow crolla any chance in that fight. Linares movement and speed requires some serious athletic antidote. Not a fit plodder like crolla
Gallagher has flaws but you are right there is only so much you can do with what you have. Crolla loses to Linares every time no matter what.
Fair enough if it was just this fight You would be correct.....but it's more than just Crolla-linares. There is a long term pattern to this ....and the facts are not in joes favour.
Ever been to the movies Billy? And it was a poor one? Walked out disappointed etc...you don't need to be a Hollywood director to tell it was a stinker of a film.... Similarly if water is pouring through your ceiling you don't need to be a plumber to know there is a leak. Some things are self evident.
Oh I agree. Gallagher over the last year or so has been found wanting. I'm not really sure what the gameplan is other than be as fit as possible and wait to the opponents tires late. It will be very interesting to see how Quigg looks with Roach and what changes we see.
