Joe Gans vs. Benny Leonard Rules: 20x20 ring 1910-1915 style officiating 10 point must system 15 rounds Gans has the edge on power with a 2-inch height and reach advantage. Leonard has the edge on footwork, defense, and speed.
Love Gans and maybe this is because there is more film on Leonard but I'm going to have to choose Benny. He was damn near unbeatable at his best. This would be as about as good a matchup as one could imagine.
Gans was more exciting to watch, but Leonard had a near flawless style that mixed footwork, speed, and smarts, plus he was tough as nails. Leonard had no color line, and pretty much beat the best of his times. I'd pick Leonard via decision, 9-6 or 10-5 with Gans losing a few of the rounds by close margin.
It says 15 rounds..I try an stick to the question itself especially after the recent Duran Benitez debacle
If I made it 20 rounds I'd still the Leonard. Not one pick for Gans so far on the poll? A tad surprising.
Honestly I don't have a great argument against Gans. We are talking about 2 of the Top 10 ever boxers here... Could just depend on the day. I wish there was more film on Gans. He was so... What's the word everyone hates?... Oh, Modern.
Bump The Old Master vs The Ghetto Wizard I got Leonard sticking and moving to a UD over 15, I think he pumps his jab and backpedals whilst knowing not to get inclose with Gans, who does have the power to land in Leonard and have him in trouble. I think Benny would have Gans's stiff arms and uppercuts timed and would be able to steer himself away from any overhands or grappling Gans tries to employ Leonard has one of the best pfp pfp jabs I've ever seen I think he frustrates Joe and uses footwork to outmanoeuvre the Old Master Leonard UD15
I don't know enough about Gans. Was he quick enough to cut the ring off? Remember Benny could punch too so he couldn't be careless. I'll pick Leonard because I just have more info/film. Benny Leonard is one of those boxers that looks better than the legend of the myth when the film of him came out.
