Gans by dec he is one of the very few Lightwieghts I would pick over Ike,he is a better boxer and can punch hard in his own right.
I'll see what i think. When Williams explodes its gunna make problems for Gans most definitely, Gans will need to box him in the center of the ring, and his reach looks pretty decent for him to do so, he'll need to mix it up with some of them hard rights aswell, will take a masterful performance on his part to pull this off, Williams is a force of nature to be reckoned with when he is on. For Williams, he would be stalking, probing with a jab, and if you look at the two men in action, one could see Williams finding Gans and trying to go to work, not that spells any kind of foregone conclusion, not by a long shot, Gans was tough as. For the parts of the bout when Ike is stationery, Gans will likely have the better of it, he was too accurate for that. People are definitely gunna use the 'primitive' card here, and pick Williams. Im not sure, i think Williams can possibly do this, outworking, and even hurting his man for a decision. Or Gans boxes beautiifully and gets one. I'll pick Williams sorry, but Gans the greater lightweight for me.
Gans by late round kayo. He beat a lot of guys just as tough as Williams and went twenty rounds or more on many occasions.
It depends on whether that first McGoven hook really hurt Gan's or not. Most historians think the fight was thrown, Nat Fleisher included. A few in the day thought that first hook had Gan's out and explained why he kept going down from tap's and pushes. On film you just can't say. Aside from that this is one tough match to conclude, two greats by any standard.
Williams was a great LW with excellent all round fighting abilities and a tremendous will. But Gans was supposed to be a genius. I will go with Gans by close, competitive decision.
late 1890's joe gans beats williams. but gans during the mid 1900's would definitely get KO'ed by Ike.
