Gans is the vastly superior technician on film, but he’s also outweighed by close to 30 lbs here. Can he still win?
True but we both know skills can overcome size, and you seem to be Tommy's greatest critic on the forum at the moment with regard to his skills. Blackburn was likely more skilled than Burns, and outweighed Gans by 15 pounds in one of their bouts.
The report said ‘The match was made at 140 pounds, but the actual weights are not mentioned. NY Times reported that Blackburn "was apparently ten or fifteen pounds heavier than" Gans’ it sounds like someone just looked at them and guessed, also Jack Blackburn was naturally 135lbs, so if he was 160lbs, he’s gonna be out of shape weighing that much, Tommy Burns was actually often in the 170Lbs range and was naturally that weight. Tommy Burns has a basic skill set of using range deception and feints with the lead hand to set up the big right hand, I feel he outmuscles Gans up close and gets more work off through pushing him off and getting punches off.
Gans the far better and greater fighter p4p, wouldn't stand a chance against prime Burns who was typically around 40lbs heavier.
Blackburn seemed more-so around 150 lbs naturally than 135 which was early in his career. Gans himself was known to be around 138 in welterweight fights, and Blackburn weighed 147 against Philidelphia O'Brien. When Blackburn matured he must've gained a considerable amount of weight.
