If he doesn't make it in the top 3 in any greatest LWs list then the list is dismissable, imo. Greatest win? Almost as hard to answer as "greatest Beatles song". I wouldn't say the Walcott fight though as Joe was fighting with a broken arm. If he'd beaten a healthy Walcott then I'd say yes.
From what I understand he had tuberculous at the end of his career and was still winning big fights. I have him at #3 on my Lightweight list behind Benny Leonard and Pernell Whitaker and in front of Ike Williams. In the films I've seen of him he seems to cross his legs more often than I've seen other boxers do when moving around the ring. Other than that I see no real concerns.
Great post. :thumbsup Like most say, lock for Top3. For me even Top2. Leonard and him have a superior resume at lw compared to Duran and match about everything else he did. All three are on the same leve and I think slighly above the other lws in question like Williams, Canzoneri and so on.
Gans had all around ability. There are three filmed fights of Gans, so you can get a good assessment of who he was. An ATG for sure, Gans is a consensus top 10 all time great at at lightweight. Some have him as high as #1. I would say #3 or #4 at lightweight.
Nice one....some tasty info here....thanks :good I had also read or heard of Gans being the creator regarding the jab etc.....hence the thread. Any out of the ring stories ?
