Given the liberal referreing at the time he would have been almost imposible to stop at his peak.

You could let Dempsey, Louis or Tyson try I surpose.

yes i agree about the liberal reffing at that time but put it in todays sport with the same type of liberal reffing back in his time. is anyone koing him can the great rocky marciano do it or anyone else?a lot of people sure tried. that was his main drawing card .people came to see him get kod ,just like the people that paid to see lamotta get his brains beat in because they didnt like him.

Supposedly he was stopped at the end of his career much like Tex Cobb was.

Their chins simply gave out after all those years of abuse.

    Oh, Mercer too.

He was stopped early in his career too, by a third-rater.

Senya is relentless on mistakes and though very well read on boxing facts ,he has a tendency to be pedantic ,a trait I find in myself.I read a few stories about Grimm in monthly magazines ,saying he had never been kod, then in the next issue there would be quotes from fighters saying how they kod him, so it's not surprising conflicting stories about him emanate . We all drop bricks, acknowledging them is the mark of a Man.:good

He was knocked out. Here's the Philadelphia Inquirer report:

THIS NEW MARINE SIMPLY A MARK
    --------
Ed. Smith Made Short Work of Joe Grim at the Broadway Athletic Club
    --------
    KNOCKED OUT IN SECOND
    --------
Defeated Man Was No Match for the Colored Boy, Who Had All the Best of the Contest
    --------
Another fistic phenom went astray in the boxing world last evening. Joe Grim, marine and pugilist, who has had the honor, it is said, of boxing a six-round draw with Jim Hall, being quickly put to sleep at the Broadway Athletic Club by Ed Smith, a colored pug of no mean ability.

Grim meant well enough, but his knowledge of boxing was limited to the smallest degree, and Smith had no difficulty at all in landing on the pride of the Navy Yard. The Marine was a second edition of Tom Sharkey in build, but size proved to be a small factor to Smith, who went right at his man from the sound of the gong, jabbing his left on Joe's face, following this up with a few choice uppercuts and counters, much to Grim's surprise, who seemed bewildered at this style of fighting. The Marine made a desperate attempt to do something, so he swung his right with hard force, and had it landed it would have been all day with Ed Smith. But Ed had plenty of time to get out of the way, which he did, and seeing an opening put the soldier down with a right hand swing on the jaw just as the bell rang.

Grim came up very gallus in the second round, but he soon dropped the air as Smith landed a few hard blows on his face and body that had the delegate from League Island fighting in a wild state. After a few more moments of fiddling on the part of Smith, which caused an anxious look to appear upon Grim's face, the big black ended the agony by catching Joe on the stomach, which sent Grim down for good and out.
