now yesterday i was watching a small document on joe jennette when he fought sam mcvey in france of 1909, his endurance kept him 49 hard lasting rounds taking a beating, and knocking down the great sam mcvey, until sam gave up in the 49th round. Now, corbett lasted i think 66 rounds which is a total of 3 hours against peter jackson, he is well known for knocking out john l sullivan. Now between these 2 great heavyweights, who do YOU think will win this fight and why?, Discuss.
I've not read a tremendous amount on Jennette, and I don't think there is any film of him when he was an active fighter, so it's hard to say. This, to me, is a pick-em' fight. They both had such stamina and toughness that I can't say that one could outlast or knock out the other, and they were both so skilled (apparently) than it's also hard to say which one would win a decision. So, basically what I'm trying to say is: I have no ****ing clue.
James Corbett gets overlooked, he fought the two best heavyweights in DIFFERENT ERAS(sullivan jackson) and (jeffries fitzimmons). He did extremley well. Up on the cards vs jeffries coming off a layoff at 34 years old, way up on the cards vs fitz(fitz grabbed on to the ref to save himself from being counted out), fighting a draw with Peter Jackson when both were in their primes, knocking out an aging but dangerous john L sullivan. Impressive stuff. I think this fight is a toss up it all depends on how much better skill wise you think peter jackson is than joe jenette. Jenette never faced a fast footed boxer like corbett.
No he didnt but the best boxer he met [Jackson] held him to a draw.which suggests he would have his hands full with Jeanette,Corbett put up a very impressive display against Jeffries, and over 20 rds, likely would have won the fight, could he outskill Jeanette? James J was probably faster and was a couple of inches taller ,Jeanette may have hit harder, its an interesting match up ,I think I'll wait to see what replies come in.
good, interesting matchup. I think that in a twenty round fight Corbett outpoints Jeanette. However, the longer the fight goes, the more I would be inclined to bet on Joe. Corbett had great stamina, he does not get enough credit for that, but, Joe may be in a whole different league. I don't think Corbett can end the fight on his power (though he may knock down Joe and that might contribute to a points win) but if it were any kind of fight to the finish, Joe simply would not stay down and not give up. He could catch Corbett sometime. Jeanette outpointed Carpentier though, so, who knows. I would give Jeanette a better chance against Gent. Jim then I would give Jack Johnson though, due to styles.
Corbett UD. Jeanette did not clinch or defend as well as Johnson. He did not have Langford skills or power. He did not have McVey's size or power. Jeanette really was not a great points type of boxer either. His best stuff was toughness, stamina, and survival tactics. Joe could fight a bit, and hit, but he was more of a reactionary type of fighter. At least that is my take, and trying to counter punch, a jitterbug like Corbett is the hardest way to beat him.
