Joyce was almost 31 when he won an Olympic silver medal in 2016 and was 2 months short of 32 when he turned pro in 2017. He will be 35 when he meets Dubois,
Joyce is slow, BUT he hits hard, has accuracy to the head or body, likes to mix it and can dish it out as well as he takes it. I would not write him off.
Joyce's good performance, he had several fights in which I saw him worse, he can calmly enter the top 10, but he has no level to be champion. 50/50 against Dubois in my opinion, Joyce has fought a much better level of fighters
I think Joyce sparks Dubois early. Given is age, I can see what Fury would like to fight him down the road.
He'll be fine. He only fights like a dunderhead to gage how heavy his opponents shots are, if they're heavy, he tightens up his defense and gets defensively more sound as most of his matches progress. Also, he's a little more versatile than people are giving him credit for. Remember, in his first pro match against Lewison, he didn't take as many chances, was focused on defense early, controlled the range well, picked his shots intelligently and worked behind his jab effectively never just went full on juggernaut. He has a deceptively solid ring IQ, he slowly builds the pressure until it's suffocating if it's an opponent he should fear, but boxes responsibly against a threat. Which is similar to GGG. He knows he has a good chin, so he exploits it when he thinks he can and puts on a power punching juggernaut display but uses his smarts when he should.
Joyce is great to watch. Who was saying cherry picks ? Ian Lewison in a 10 rounder on your debut ? Some cherry. Years ago, before everybody started stressing about a Fighter's "0" and calling Welterweight 147, Joyce would have been loved for his courage and the thrills that come with watching him. Dear old Harry Carpenter would have loved Joe.
He threw plenty of very straight jabs yesterday. Yeah he's slow, compared to a middleweight but his combinations are still quite fast for heavyweight.
Nah. He's still pretty slow, stiff and ponderous even for a larger HW. That's one of the main points of criticism along with how easy he is to hit. He has a great engine and workrate for a HW(especially a larger one) but much like Kownacki he's no speed demon. Also seems to be lacking in power, that's not to say he's fratherfisted but he's definitely not a one punch guy. If he were his flaws would be easier to overlook. He's not going to be able to break down the better HWs. Hell, he couldn't break down a faded Jennings and was nearly taken out in that one. If Jennings had any power whatsoever Joyce would have been toast in that one. He's not the worst but still a KO waiting to happen man. Let's also not forget that time is not on his side. He'll be over 35 by the time he steps in with Dubois and even if he wins that one he's going to get annihilated by the top of the division if he's able to land any of those fights. 2016 Olympic batch was just weak. Hrgovic is the only guy from that year with any real potential.
Jennings momentarily hurt him with a body shot, he didn't come close to stopping him. I see just as many flaws in Hrgovic, who was getting tagged clean by Eric Molina, and rocked if I recall correctly by Tom Little, so he's not all that great either. Just have to agree to disagree, I think the Joyce is better than Yoka and Hrgovic, and will get further than both. Also, he's 35, no big deal. He's a well-preserved 35, he can go another five or six maybe seven years. He closes distance very well, constantly punching against far slower opponents, overwhelming most of them with volume, and hits them before they can hit them. He's not that slow. Also he gets hit clean far less than the most people think he does. I think you're underrating him.
He starts slow, very slow. And is very open to a straight right. His chin is solid, so it hasn't been a problem yet. If Dubois' power is legit, then maybe he's the one to stop him early but I think Joyce can probably take it. Once he starts going to work after a few rounds I think Joyce is going to be a pain in the ass for a lot of guys. Heavy punches and lots of them. Pressures well too which is going to exhaust guys. I think against say Wilder, yet he's going to get blasted out, but elsewhere I'm not so sure
