Iron Vs Iron Green Vs Glacial At Joyce's age and now with no prospect of a title fight whatsoever, I'd be looking for how to make good money whilst I still could... and this might be as good an opportunity as any that'd be on the table for him at this point, so why not?
No chance. Unless I wanted to cash him out or further sabotage Joyce's career, which is what I suspect the Zhang fights were. Joyce looked like he'd seen a ghost going out to fight Zhang in the rematch. He's 38+, has taken enormous punishment in his career and his confidence has to be shot. We also know that Joyce can't land his best punch (the jab) against a southpaw (Ngannou can switch hit) and he can't bully Ngannou physically, who is a stronger, better wrestler. The quicker Ngannou would land a lot of bombs and take Joyce out in all probability. "I told Ngannou after the spar: 'You can come to boxing no problem, this is easy for you'. Ngannou is one of the strongest men you will ever see in any combat sport." - Joe Joyce, 2020 "Francis can bang, he is very strong, I mean, who knows, he could knock Dillian Whyte out man." - Joe Joyce, 2021
This is one fight that I am positive that Ngannou really wins in impressive fashion. I judge Joyce as a really terrible fighter though so it is not too much about Ngannou being great or anything...
"Frank Warren has put forward Manuel Charr and Joe Joyce as two potential opponents for Francis Ngannou's next fight" Looks like we may find out if Frank "Don King" Warren has his way. He's not suggesting Joyce because he wants to make his cash cow Fury look bad is he? His intention is to put Joyce in there like a lamb to the slaughter, cashing him out. Possibly adding more age + wear and tear on him so he can reliably take a loss in the rematch to Dubois. He's also not suggesting the much younger and fresher Dubois as an opponent, probably because he regards Ngannou as far too dangerous. Bogdan Dinu's and Trevor Bryan's only for now.
I don't think "deserves" comes into it. Ngannou is a cash cow now; the Saudi's will sign him and he'll have much of the MMA community behind him, buying the PPV for his next fight to see the boxer get destroyed and boxing be humiliated (there's huge appetite for this after Jake Paul's humiliation of MMA). Joyce probably fits the bill as a stylistically very beatable opponent who would immediately give Ngannou a lot of additional credibility, perhaps a top 10 Ring ranking if he demolished him.
No not Joyce vs Ngannou, we dont want to see a exhibition of 2 defensive feather fisted, fleet of foot and punch, underweight heavies waltzing around the squared circle.
I'd rather they signed Zhang and fed him Ngannou. Joyce is a busted flush at the top level for me. Blasted out in three rounds and definitely not the future of.the sport. A gate keeper at best if he soldiers on.
You'd rather that because you want to see someone beat Ngannou, not that Zhang would be sure fire to win by any means. If I were managing Ngannou I'd have him fight someone stylistically easy with a big name next: top 10 Joyce, Chisora or former cruiser titlist Okolie. Get those MMA fan PPV coins coming in, make them believe he'll beat Joshua or Wilder.
