You say Lenroy was a live opponent ... Joyce demolishes him then you say you wouldn't expect him to last 30 seconds by a fighter you deem great?
does anybody think those 50s heavyweights would have been standing inline to fight a 6-3, 230 pound southpaw...Thomas would probably be a legendary fighter if he came along in the 50s, IF anybody would have fought him. This content is protected
Defense being your offence is fitting here. It'll be hard for any guy to get shots off while being swarmed with thudding blow after blow , over and over.
If the fighter in question was Commonwealth grade, then they would have fought him at the drop of a hat, and they would have rightly been criticized for it! There are heavyweights that size in every era. There size does not become an issue, unless they are legitimately world class.
Pat Lester was 6”3.5 and 230lb. And that was almost 100 years ago. Would he also be a legendary fighter that the 50s heavyweights wouldnt fight? You realize that boxing history is littered with 6’3 230lb fighters before the 60’s, right?
The fact that this isn’t common knowledge to some is odd. I think we all know what’s coming next: “You can’t compare those oafs to the slickness of Joyce!”
There have been guys the size of Valuev going back to the bare knuckle era. Size alone will not guarantee success, in an era dominated by smaller heavyweights. As for Joyce, he might turn out to be another Anthony Joshua, or he might turn out to be another David Price. Most likely he is somewhere between.
I saw Joyce again over the weekend. While he won in 2 rounds, he's one of the slower guy's I've seen, and he misses badly like an amateur. Wide open to counters, and IMO can be hit flush. Joyce will need a top chin to survive with these flaws. If he has the will and chin to take it, okay maybe he would beat Rocky. If they are not top class, the Juggernaut is getting stopped. Remember, Sergy Kuzmin, a decent undefeated processional stopped him in the amateurs.
Lenroy is game and always competitive. I think he was a good opponent at this stage for Joyce. But forget about comparisons with ATG fighters. I don’t know what was supposed to be impressive about this pad work out? Nothing there to worry a world class fighter from the 1950s. Watching him there I didn’t care much for the southpaw left cross he uses. The weight is on his front foot instead of his back foot and he’s pushing it out and reaching with it. It’s poweder puff because his technique is wrong. As south paws go he couldn’t tie Micheal Moorers shoe laces.
