You realize that he weighed in under 180 for several of his early fights, right? By the way, is there any indication that Marciano had the same extreme training and eating regime for the duration of his career? I could be completely wrong, but it seems like the most colorful anecdotes all come from the tail end of his career. In any event, plenty of guys who train really hard still drain themselves down to make weight in the days leading up to the fight.
I am Yes, it is pretty reliably documented. He essentially trained all year round, whether he had a fight scheduled or not. His training regime was more like that of an endurance athlete than a boxer. He obviously suffered from what we today call Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Any modern trainer, would have him doing far less endurance work, and bulking up if he had any room in his weight class. I sincerely doubt that he could have cut weight on top of his 50s training regime. He weighed less than Archie Moore when they fought, but compare them in any picture!
So the guys who have big problems with a hypothetical larger Marciano, have zero issues speculating he can fight at a lighter weight. Summary: Nobody is surprised.
This is one of the many ways in which the size argument is employed insincerely. The old timer gets the lowest recorded weight, and the modern fighter gets body fat taken into the argument. Marciano can use every modern method to sweat down, but he could never use any modern method to bulk up! If his size disparity is such a decisive disadvantage, then why do you need to use every trick to magnify it? The same people who dismiss Marciano's chances against modern heavyweights based on his size, are happy to pick modern middleweights over Primo Carnera!
There’s a racist troll poster who is constantly calling Marciano “supporters” ******ed and a slew of other names. Instead of handling that, you’re instigating another flame war with Chok. What gives?
There's a pretty obvious difference between speculating about what Marciano would likely weigh, given his size, if he were actually fighting today vs. gifting him 15-25 pounds of muscle to even the odds in a hypothetical matchup. You've been making a lot of these dishonest sarcastic arguments lately. Everything ok?
To be fair, you can't have it both ways. He is just a super middleweight by today's standards, but he is the only fighter in history who could not add mass! Come on!
Who is saying that he cannot add mass? Please show me what I'm missing. You seem to be conflating two entirely different discussions.
Argue the position that he could, and that this should be reflected in the hypothetical match up, and see where you get!
Huh? The default in this forum with these hypothetical matchups has always been to take heavyweights as they actually existed, as if they stepped out of a time machine, so to speak. Do you dispute this?? If you want to speculate about how he would fare as a 210-215lber then knock yourself out, but don't pretend that anyone who disagrees with that approach is being hypocritical.
