What's the news? He was supposed to fight Vusi Malinga back in April, but it didn't happen for whatever reason. Both have now been inactive for several months. :? Next week Yonnhy Perez is booked in with Abner Mares, and Vic Darchinyan with Eric Barcelona. So a rematch with either of them is off the table for the time being.
He really does fight in spirts. One period he has 3 fights within a 6 month span, the next he has one fight in a year and a half. I would say a lot of it has to do with Don King. If Agbeko was with TR or GBP or any decent promoter we would see him regularly.
No-one in their right mind would fight Agbeko. You can't hurt him & he'll headbutt you senseless all night long.
Mulinga's nuttier than Thai noodles, though. He went up against Sahaprom and then a peak Hasegawa back to back (and was loopy enough to get off the canvas twice to come back at Hozumi).
Are these answers to my question? Q: What happened with the Mulinga match? A: Don King. :huh I'm not sure that's a satisfying answer. So because he's a shitty promoter, fights that are ostensibly good to go and for which training camps have been gone through are apt to just dissipate for no given reason?
Not sure why his last fight didn't go ahead but there may have been an issue with timing. Wasn't it supposed to be an eliminator for the no.1 contender spot with the IBF? Only problem with that is Abner Mares is the no.1 contender & gets his title shot next weekend. If Perez were to defend successfully, he wouldn't have to make his next mandatory until May 2011 (at the earliest). Kind of defeats the purpose of Agbeko fighting an eliminator for the no.1 spot in March 2010.
That doesn't seem a reason to not at least stay busy, and notch up a win over a decent enough second-tier name (at least on the international scene). :think
This explains (sort of) what happened to Agbeko-Malinga http://www.accra-mail.com/index.php...ack-bout-postponed&catid=73:boxing&Itemid=221
