If prime Louis caught a time machine to 1988 and wanted to repeat his unbroken 12 year reign until 2000, what would be his odds of accomplishing such assuming he fought all worthy contenders?

Well in that time line ,at some point he'd be facing a young Tyson, Holyfield ,Bowe ,Lewis, and young Vit ,so if he beats all those guys he really is the greatest .

The odds would be close to zero.

Highly improbable bordering on impossible. Too many great fighters to contend with and there wasn't a world war going on to allow him to sit on the title for years.

That's what I was thinking....any fighter who could go through all those names undefeated really would be the number 1 GOAT heavyweight. Not to mention solid top level contenders like M. Spinks, Bruno, Ruddock, Douglas, Tucker, Tua, Rahman, Moorer, old Foreman, old Holmes etc

So how do you think he'd do?

He'd do very well but he wouldn't hold on to the strap for 12 years. Too many landmines in that field. He was a tremendous offensive fighter but could also be hurt, often by guys who weren't the powerpunching type... and if the 90's had one thing, it was powerpunchers.

In the real world this period saw the lineal title change hands nine times, between eight fighters!

Given the number of strong champions and contenders that emerged during this time span, it is hard to imagine anybody replicating what Louis did in this own day.

It does perhaps give some perspective on what a difficult thing it was to accomplish, even in a predominantly weak era.

And with out disrespecting Joe or what he achieved ,it show's up his era to a degree. I don't actually see Louis getting to 95 unbeaten .Tyson ,Lewis, Bowe ,Holyfield ..that s a great deal to get through .

Louis may have made it 1978 to 1990 unbeaten..... minus Tyson and Holmes which are far from foregone conclusions

If he made it past Tyson Bows Lewis and Holyfield I think that's enough to cement him as GOAT even if he needed a rematch to get it right

He was a noted booger sugar aficionado post-retirement so those proclivities were already there.
